Chris S. Witwer likes to call herself Wallyhood’s “Lower Wallingford Correspondent.” Chris is a former Texan (is there any such thing?) who came to Seattle in 2005 for three reasons: weather, scenery, and coffee culture. It has taken her four years to begin to understand Seattle humor, but she’s getting there. Chris is a bureaucrat by day, and caffeine-fueled blogger when she’s not reading novels or pretending to write one. She lives with her partner, Laura, and two cats — Dolce and Molly, and uses the internet to make fun of stuff on her personal blog, http://felsputzer.wordpress.com.

Changes Bar Asks for Help

Chris Witwer December 22, 2011 18 Comments

Yesterday we received a reader tip from someone whose name I cannot discern from the email address.  The reader asked if we’d seen something on Facebook about Changes Bar on 45th Street here in Wallingford, and included the following link:  http://changesinwallingford.com/wp/blog/changes-in-wallingford-needs-your-help/ .

It’s a tab on Changes’ official website for “Changes Petition” which states the following:

“For the last 22 years Changes has been a much loved fixture in Wallingford and in the Seattle gay community.  Recently, new elements in the neighborhood have decided we don’t belong here anymore. These complaints come from a single new homeowner in the area …

The Argosy Christmas Ship™ festival returns to Gas Works Park for the Parade Finale on Friday, December 23rd. Not familiar with the Christmas Ships? Check it out here.

The Seattle Girls’ Choir’s most accomplished performers, the group known as Prima Voci,  will sing from 9:45 – 10:05 pm.  See Argosy’s website for more information.

So come on down to Gas Works Friday night, listen to the choir, enjoy the decorated boats, and warm your hands near the bonfire.  I’ll be there with my spiked cocoa!

Happy Holidays!…

Lice Knowing You

Chris Witwer December 19, 2011 6 Comments

Wallyhood welcomes Lice Knowing You, a new salon that does just what you think they do – lice removal.  As they said in their email to Wallyhood, “Now, now — before you roll your eyes in exasperation [about yet another salon opening], let me just tell you that this particular salon is nitpicky. Literally. Lice Knowing You is a head lice detection and removal salon.”

I spoke with Lice Knowing You owner Nancy Gordon this week.  She owns four other lice removal salons throughout the area, but this one is the first in Seattle.  Why Wallingford?  Are we extra licey?  …

Dr. Doo’s Holidoo

Chris Witwer December 17, 2011 3 Comments

Kisses might begin with the letter “k,” but they don’t begin with “Kay.”  And I will not be adding the Lexus ringtone to my partner’s phone Christmas Eve (sorry, honey!).

I just spent a week at a hotel/mall that’s been overtaken by holiday-themed consumerism.  They charge $30 to decorate gingerbread cookies with “Gingy” while waiting to have a photo taken with Santa. The 19-story atrium is decked out in twinkly Christmas lights.  Christmas trees line the hotel lobby. Parking valets wear bowler hats & coats with tails. Wake up calls from Shrek. Spend spend spend!

And here in Seattle, the …

Woodlawn Santa Is Out of Commission

Chris Witwer December 16, 2011 2 Comments

Oh noes!  Bad news, folks. Woodlawn Santa (aka. Sharon Ehrig) is out of commission for the season.

Sharon broke her right wrist this morning and will be unable to wave from her porch at 3916 Woodlawn Ave this holiday season.  She will not be on the porch for the rest of the year.   But Santa’s lights are on!  Something like 15,000 of them, so do drop by if you enjoy Santa’s Christmas decorations.  I sure do.

Tonight the weather is mild, so Santa’s got the front door open and is able to visit with neighbors as they stop by.  Actually, …

Explosion Sound 12/5

Chris Witwer December 6, 2011 18 Comments

This morning Wallyhood received a reader tip from a tipster who said she heard something that sounded like an explosion last night near 54th & 1st Ave.   Not sure what time.

We haven’t seen anything on the news/police/fire wires yet.  Did anyone else hear it, and does anybody know what happened?

Gas explosion? Car accident? Fire? Transformer?

Let us know in the Comments section!

H/T to Tina.  Thanks for the inquiry!…
