Thursday Evening Huskies Game

Chris Witwer November 18, 2010 10 Comments

The UW Huskies host UCLA tonight, for a rare Thursday night football game. Kickoff is at 5 p.m. and traffic is expected to be significantly congested in and around the University District.

Nobody knows for sure, but it doesn’t take a huge stretch of the imagination to envision delays along 45th street through Wallingford late Thursday afternoon and into rush hour.  Starting at 2:30 p.m., bus routes that normally travel on the UW campus will be rerouted due to expected traffic levels. Check rider alerts for reroutes for routes 31, 44, 65, 67, 68, 75, 205, 271, 272, 277, 372, 373 & ST 540.

Metro will not provide special bus service to the game as it does on weekends, because buses will be busy with regular rush hour service.  If you’re going to the game, get info about transportation options at http://www.gohuskies.com/transportation/ucla.html.

One wise old friend did tell me the traffic shouldn’t be terribly bad though, because nobody’s going to want to sit through this particular game anyway…

“The biggest expense by far is getting fans to the game. UW plans to kick about half of its 9,000 parking-permit holders out of their spaces that day, making room for at least some football fans. To get the rest to Husky Stadium, the athletic department has chartered 340 private buses to carry 20,000 people, at a cost of about $395,000.”

I’m having a hard time sympathizing with their budget woes when they toss $395k away in one afternoon.

But it’s going to be on National TV, Andy! Spare no expense!

Actually, I feel exactly the way you do. Though I do believe this was set up/planned under Emmert a while back.

There is also NO parking at the usual UW lots tonight, unless you’re a Tyee Club member, so if you’re actually going to the game, walk!

I’m not sure traffic’s going to be all that bad. over here in 98105 we got post cards last week offering free tickets, we thought maybe as a consolation prize for the inconvenience. all we had to do is show up with ID before the game to get them. nobody in our family is interested in going to this game and we couldn’t find anybody else who wanted free tickets. makes me wonder if attendance mightn’t be a tad low!

You don’t seem like a happy kind of guy Carl, but try taking Lake City Way home. It may save you some time.

It was a hell of a game and worth the small headache that is caused some folks. The national exposer for the school and region alone was worth it all….

Andy, the athletic department is COMPLETELY self sustaining, so if they choose to spend additional money to get their loyal fans to the game then that is their decision. They do not get a dime from the state…

Our neighborhood and surrounding area businesses benefit immensely from Husky games, so keep that in mind when traffic gets a bit heavy on 45th…

    Go Dawgs!!!
