Interlake Public School Days

Jordan Jordan September 17, 2011 3 Comments

c. 1960, Seattle Public Schools Archives

Ever wonder what Wallingford Center used to be before it was Wallingford Center? Spin back the clock to 1904, and you’ll find them opening the Interlake Public School, the first school in Wallingford (Latona followed in 1906 and Lincoln in 1907).

Interlake closed its doors in 1971 (leaving the building vacant for 15 years: and you thought the Festering Pit at Stone Way and 40th was an eyesore!), so, if we do our math right, that means that students in the last class to graduate would be just old enough now…to ask that we don’t do our math right.

If you’re one of those students or the teachers who taught him, Wallingford Center is inviteing you to stop in today, Sunday, September 18th from 2 – 4 pm for a school days reunion. We published a shout-out for alumni back in August, and Cindy Combs, the organizer, says it worked, so you won’t be alone.

They’ve got old photographs of the school on dsiplay in the hallways (up through Oct 2), and there will be refreshments, tours, and a few surprises. For example, that kid that always used to beat you up and take your lunch money will be on hand to apologize and demonstrate how his life turned out worse than yours. Good times, people!

Full deets on the School Days web site. Send them your reminisces or leave them here!

i would prefer that the photos be a permanent collection, like they were displayed before they were removed. I enjoyed seeing them, and I think it is an addition to Wallingford Center, not a distraction. I’m from Iowa, so have no personal interest in having my face there. But they are charming, interesting, educational and historic. Wonder if Lorig woud consent to this?

I believe the building was also used as the Lincoln High School Annex during much of the 1970’s

I agree that the photos should be on permanent display, they would indeed enhance the Wallingford Center.
I attended K-6 there before moving on to Hamilton and then to Lincoln, all within walking distance of our home at 4122 Densmore Avenue, right acroo the street from the Hamilton boys gym.
