PI: City dump is named after J.P. Patches

Margaret December 15, 2011 2 Comments

The Seattle PI reported today that, once renovations are complete in 2014, the new education center at the North Transfer Station (1350 N. 34th St.) will be named after J.P. Patches.

Actor Chris Wedes, whose beloved clown character entertained Seattleites on KIRO TV from 1958 to 1981, made a special appearance on KCTS last night during a pledge drive when the naming announcement was made. A letter written by the Seattle City Council declared the honor to Patches, who was also known as “Mayor of the City Dump”. From the PI:

“Your J.P. Patches character, known for his wit and …

Happy 103rd Birthday, Mary!

Margaret December 15, 2011 3 Comments

A heartfelt “Happy Birthday” goes out to longtime Wallingford resident Mary Orser , who turned 103 last Friday, December 9. Mary moved to Wallingford in January, 1928 which means this coming January she’ll have been here — in the same house on 43rd and Meridian — for 84 years. Mary lived here with her parents until they passed, and she stayed on, working at the Meridian Nursing Home until she retired.

I spoke to Mary’s niece, Rosemary Meyers, who looks after Mary. She says that Mary still gets out and about, though she’s not quite as steady on her feet …

Snow Leopard Trust Holiday Sale

Margaret December 14, 2011 Comments are off

Here’s a neighborhood holiday shopping event with global benefits: The Snow Leopard Trust is holding a holiday sale this Thursday (12/15) at the Good Shepherd Center (#225) from 2:00-5:00pm.

The Snow Leopard Trust is an non-profit, international organization headquartered right here in Wallingford, dedicated to community-based snow leopard conservation. There are only 4,000 snow leopards left in the wild and the Snow Leopard Trust partners with communities in 5 different countries to address snow leopard endangerment. In an email to me, Antonia provided a great example of some of their community work:

One of our flagship programs, Snow Leopard Enterprises, …

‘Stoneway Village’ gets a new name

Margaret December 14, 2011 7 Comments

Here’s an update from the developers of Stoneway Village, including some new photos, and a new name:

It’s been a while since our last update and a lot has progressed since then, the building is now framed, the roof is on, brick work is almost finished, the plumbing and electrical rough-ins are about half way through, and pre-drywall and elevator work has started! Whew!

We worked hard through the summer and had minimal rain through the fall which really helped get the building sealed up and kept mostly dry.  That makes for a much easier, cleaner construction process. The outdoor …

Celebrate One Wallingford this Thursday

Margaret December 13, 2011 Comments are off

Last week, we told you about “Celebrate One Wallingford” – a party to celebrate our community together, but it bears repeating because of all the cool activities that are planned for the event. One of the highlights of the evening will be an all-neighborhood-inclusive musical component. Kathleen Cromp, the party’s organizer explains:

Connie Voget and Laurie McCray – both from the ‘hood – are helping to recruit, shape, organize the music and musicians.  Connie, a community activist in numerous ways, is a music educator / musician herself.  Laurie is a (shy)fiddler with a large network of musical friends from the …

School boundaries to change again in Wallingford?

Margaret December 13, 2011 31 Comments

Seattle Public Schools proposes to change neighborhood school boundaries in the New Student Assignment Plan to alleviate capacity issues over at John Stanford International School (JSIS), which currently has four Kindergarten classes. The actual proposal won’t be put to a vote by the school board until January 18, and if the board votes to move forward, the change wouldn’t take place until the 2012-13 school year; but Tracy Libros (Manager, Enrollment Planning) and Robert Boesché (Interim Superintendent for Business and Finance) addressed the issues to the board during a meeting on December 7. You can read the presentation here. Their…
