Sponsored Post: The Power of Community

Margaret September 26, 2013 Comments are off

The following is a post from Wallyhood sponsor, Chris Kirchoff, owner of Kirchoff Fitness:

One thing I’ve believed in since I started doing training is the power of the exercise buddy system. Research at the University of Pittsburgh shows that women who work out regularly with at least one pal lose as much as third more weight than those who exercise solo. And a Brigham Young University study showed that couples who worked out together tended to be much more fit over their lives together.

So our classes encourage friendship and fellowship, with groups paired up to do activities, and …

[Ivar’s is a Wallyhood sponsor]

Ever wanted to whip up a batch of Ivar’s signature Puget Sound Clam Chowder at home? Or, how about their Crispy Fish Tacos with Apple Currant Chutney? Now, you can create 62 of Ivar’s Northwest recipes at home with Ivar’s Seafood Cookbook: The O-fish-al Guide to Cooking the Northwest Catch (Sasquatch Books; September 2013; $29.95).

The launch of Ivar’s first ever cookbook coincides with the restaurant’s 75th Anniversary, and to shell-brate, Ivar’s CEO Bob Donegan is teaming up with the chef at Ivar’s Salmon House (401 NE Northlake Way) this Wednesday, September 25, from 6-8pm …

Fare Thee Well

Margaret September 22, 2013 20 Comments

After four years and 1,143 posts, it’s time for me to say so long. This will be my last post on Wallyhood.

I’ve had an awesome four years writing for Wallyhood, and I owe most of that awesomeness to Jordan, who created the best forum for having a virtual over-the-fence chat. In the 16 years I’ve lived in Wallingford, I’ve never felt more connected to the neighborhood and Jordan really fostered that connection by giving me the opportunity to contribute to the blog. Not only is he an outstanding writer and mentor, he’s also a master mixologist (think Dick’s milkshake …

Wallingford CVS Update

Margaret September 20, 2013 36 Comments

Jenny Brailey wrote to tell us she spoke with the CVS/Velmeir spokesperson today and this information comes from her as well as the local architect they hired:

What CVS is now planning in Wallingford is to keep the existing building in place, remodel the inside and make improvements to the outside to ‘restore its grandeur.’

CVS/Velmeir is NOT interested in a multi-story building with housing on top. They say this is per the wishes of the property owner, who I’m told is a longtime Wallingford family.

The building would continue to be 1 story, possibly with some extra height in …

Seattle Schools Releases Draft of New Boundaries

Margaret September 19, 2013 44 Comments

On Tuesday afternoon, Seattle Public Schools (SPS) released a draft of the proposed new boundaries. You can read the draft in its entirety here. Here are the proposed changes for Wallingford:

1) John Stanford International School and McDonald International Elementary School would become Option Schools beginning in 2014, with small geozone boundaries for folks living nearby (those boundaries have not been drawn yet).

2) All kids living east of Stone Way and not within the JSIS/McDonald geozones would attend Green Lake Elementary.

3) By 2017, the APP program at Lincoln would split into two different pathways (Lincoln would then be …

Missing a guitar?

Margaret September 18, 2013 1 Comment

Heidi, the manager over at Bartell Drugs, wrote to tell us that they have a guitar over at the store that someone left at the bus stop out in front of the store:

We have a guitar that was left either Thursday or Friday. It appears to be a good quality/ well loved guitar. It has some very distinct characteristics. No one has been by to claim it.  Can you post a notice for people to stop by or call us?  We’d love to get it back to the owner.

Come by or call (206) 632-3313 if you think it’s …

Tour the Future Green Lake to Lake Union Greenway

Margaret September 17, 2013 9 Comments

Jeffrey Linn wrote to tell us about a bike tour of the proposed Green Lake to Lake Union Greenway. A group will meet tomorrow night (Wednesday, September 18) at 6pm at Green Lake Elementary School (2400 N. 65th St.) and everyone is invited to ride along:

This Wednesday evening, we will be having a bike tour of the proposed greenway route connecting Green Lake to Lake Union. This route is mapped out in the new Seattle Bicycle Master Plan, and we’d like to invite members of the community to come learn more about the route with us.

Greenways are residential…
