May Day “Sunrise” Celebration at Gas Works Park

The following was received from Kimberly Christensen of the Sound and Fury Morris Dancers:

The Sound and Fury Morris Dancers would like to invite the neighborhood to join us for our traditional May Day sunrise greeting at dawn this Friday, May 1, at Gas Works Park. This celebration has been going on at least 40 years and is a gathering of all of the local Morris dancing teams in Seattle. We dance, sing, and ensure that the sun rises to usher in a good Spring, and therefore a good growing season.

This May Day event is free, open to the public, and family-friendly. We encourage folks to bring a thermos, warm clothes, and their sense of cheer. They are welcome to dress up in their May morning finery (we typically see folks in flower crowns, fabulous hats, dapper jackets, witchy robes, you name it!).

When: Friday, May 1, 2026, from about 5:45–7 am

Where: Gas Works Park, 2101 N Northlake Way, in the concrete area near the water

Who: Sound and Fury Morris Dancers, Sea Witch Morris, Mossyback Morris Men

What: A traditional English celebration of May Day

Why: To ensure a nice summer and a good growing season

In addition to the May Day performance, the region’s Morris Dancers wassail in January, celebrating the region’s apple trees to encourage good growth for the year’s harvest. Sound and Fury traditionally wassail the apple trees right here in Wallingford at Meridian Park. This year’s event was as colorful as ever:
