Barb has lived in south Wallingford since 1992. She's a lady with a lopper and a ladder as lead volunteer for the Burke-Gilman Trail Urban Orchard Stewards, a City Fruit-sponsored group that cares for public fruit trees along the Burke-Gilman Trail between the University Bridge and Fremont. Since 2013 she has worked for City Fruit as the Orchard Steward Coordinator. Her mission is to wrangle and train volunteers to care for fruit trees on public land in Seattle. Barb was Director of Sustainability for the John Stanford International School in 2009-2011 and in 2012-13 was the parent representative on the JSIS Green Team. Barb helped the school attain Level 3 certification as a Washington Green School. She started the Green Team at Hamilton Int'l Middle School in 2014, and they achieved Level 1 Washington Green Schools certification in Waste and Recycling in June 2014.

City Fruit, a Seattle non-profit that supports care and harvest of local tree fruit, will be expanding into the Wallingford, Fremont, and Ballard neighborhoods this summer to harvest fruit that would normally go to waste. This fruit is then donated to food banks, shelters, and feeding programs.

In the past, Solid Ground’s Community Fruit …

In December the competition heated up in the Waste Management Think Green Recycling Challenge.  Our Friday North* volunteers organized a record 11 outreach activities last month, but the Tuesday South route, represented by West Seattle JuNo, matched us with 11 of their own.

The Recycling Challenge is a contest sponsored by Waste Management for the 10 Seattle neighborhoods it services with residential waste pickup. Of those 10, the neighborhood route that reduces its garbage per household the most from October 2013 – March 2014 as compared to a year earlier will win $25,000 to award to local non-profits.

You and your neighbors took part in eight outreach activities in November which earned the Friday North route* the cash award for completing the most outreach activities in November.

You may have heard about the Recycling Challenge at the Wallingford Community Council meeting, at the Meaningful Movies, or at a recycled crafts party at Mosaic. Perhaps you were one of the 200+ folks to have recycling information attached to your garbage can. Or maybe you were one of the deep green neighbors …
