Coronavirus by Zip Code

Ben Robinson April 2, 2020 4 Comments

Mike Ruby pointed out the King County Coronavirus dashboard that shows zipcode level data in King County.  Our zip code currently has 4 deaths from COVID 19 as of March 30th.  Our sympathies go out to those that passed, and everyone who has tested positive.  Mike’s note accompanying his email follows:

King County reports every day the results of corona virus (Covid-19) testing and the number of those who have died from the virus by zipcode. The results for the 98103 zipcode point out that this is not just some problem off in Kirkland but is a real presence right …

Old French Fries in Dick’s Parking Lot

Ben Robinson February 28, 2020 5 Comments

It is a slow news day in the neighborhood which allows us to cover some lesser known aspects of the neighborhood.

Rover sent the editors an email about they new city guides for dog owners.  They have one for Seattle, and it is fine.  If you are new to the city, the information is great.  Taking a dog to eat at Norm’s is always fun.  However, Norms’s is not in the neighborhood and everyone knows about it.

It got me to thinking about the best kept dog hangouts in the neighborhood outside of the Woodland Park dog park.  There are …

Wassailing at Meridian Park Sat Jan 11, 2-3pm

Ben Robinson January 10, 2020 Comments are off

I just learned from Kimberly Christensen that the neighborhood has a tradition of wassailing to bless the apple trees.  It appears to have been working well as the trees continue to produce fruit for City Harvest.  This Saturday you can join in the wassailing and add to next year’s harvest.  The details from Kimberly follow:

Wallingford’s own Sound and Fury Morris Dancers invite you to Meridian Park on Saturday, January 11, to Wassail the apple trees.

Wassailing is an English tradition in which a community’s apple trees are blessed through singing, dancing and the scaring away of malevolent spirits. Wassails …

Crisis Response Team in Wallyhood

Ben Robinson January 6, 2020 19 Comments

I frequently see people in the neighborhood that are clearly in need of assistance, but calling the police feels like a disproportionate response. There is no crime occurring and no immediate threat is present. For example, a few mornings ago there was a man moving erratically and moaning  in the crosswalk by QFC on Wallingford Ave.  He was clearly in need of aid, and standing in the middle of Wallingford Ave in the dark wearing black clothes.   Very little good was going to come from this situation without external intervention.  I tried to talk with him and get him out …

Green Lake Pathways of Lights Saturday Dec. 14th 4:30pm

Ben Robinson December 12, 2019 Comments are off

The holiday season traditions continue.  All the posts of the past week have reminded me just how many traditions there are in the neighborhood. (It is the holiday season so I am using an expansive definition of Wallingford).  Sadly, I normally remember these events when I inadvertently stumble into them on my way somewhere else.   The city has done a great job with this event, and they deserve some well earned credit.  The full details are below:

Pathway of Lights returns to Green Lake on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019
The holidays are upon us, and we’re getting into the spirit …

Meaningful Movie “Strangers in Town” Friday 7pm

Ben Robinson December 5, 2019 Comments are off

The long running film series continues in December with a showing of “Strangers in Town” at 7pm at Keystone Church (5019 Keystone Place North).  Show up at 6:30 for refreshments and socializing.   We help spread the word on the monthly showing, and we also like to add something new each month to the announcement.   If you missed any past showings, they also have a lending library of DVDs of past movies.    See a meaningful movie on Friday and take home ever more meaningful movies for home viewing.  The following blurb for “Strangers in Town” is from their website:

Ben Robinson November 29, 2019 1 Comment

The holiday festivities include your pets.  You can get your pet photographed with Santa Claus at WallyPets ( 4411 Wallingford Ave N ) this Sunday from 10 am – 3pm.   The event continues to support Old Dog Haven , a Washington state non-profit that provides medical care and permanent foster homes for homeless older dogs.   You can get a lot of good done by having your pet’s photo taken with Santa.

You can swing by the  Bizarre Bizzarro Bazaar and then head to WallyPets.  After all your Black Friday shopping, a walk through Wallingford will do you good and bring …
