Beards from Below: An Adventure in Facial Hair Perspective

Cindy July 9, 2011 Comments are off

Do you have a beard? Can you look up? Then your fifteen minutes of fame are nigh, courtesy of beardsfrombelow.org—a curated photo blog that offers a new perspective on facial hair. Literally.

The website is run as a labor of love by Wallingford’s own Jon Baker who, along with the site’s co-founder Robin Lee, began pioneering this new field of pogonology in early 2009. Since then, Jon has seen the underside of almost every style of beard imaginable– from ‘Abe’ to ‘ZZ Top,’ if you will.

Jon’s travels recently took him to Trondheim, Norway, for the biennial World Beard and …

Don’t forget the piñata

I grew up in the American Southwest, so you’d think I’d have memorized the story of Cinco de Mayo by now. But like many, I’ve fallen victim to the blight of the Internet, i.e., a complete lack of short-term memory, facilitated by repeated exposure to high doses of Google and Wikipedia (and symptomatically treated with the hair of the same dog). I was walking around downtown near my office a while back when I noticed a bar offering pumpkin pie shots. Now, I’m not normally a shots type of gal, but I had to give that one considerable thought. Pumpkin pie in liquid form? Yes please! I ultimately decided to forego that particular temptatation, not because my taste buds were insufficiently intrigued, but because it was about 9:30 a.m. and thus too early for a liquid lunch. Especially on a weekday. But it did get me thinking: Where can I get some seasonal drink action near home?

Well, it turns out …

(Wallyhood welcomes a new writer to our virtual pages, Cindy Yee)

When the kind folks at Wallyhood invited me to join their ranks and contribute a post here and there, I did a little soul searching to figure out exactly what I could offer. I’m no wiz when it comes to neighborhood politics. I don’t have an in with the local schools and parks. And I don’t know a dang thing about nature, gardening, beekeeping or the like.

Ah, but you know what I do have? A healthy liver, decent walking shoes and a house devoid of dependents. And so …
