Leaves Matter: Sparkling Wallingford Leads Fall Cleanup on N 45th Street

After the October 17th Fall Cleanup on N 45th Street was cancelled due to conflicts, another group has been steadily working away. Sparkling Wallingford Society founder, Carrie Johnson, thanked eight volunteers on Facebook who took part in their Saturday, October 25th cleanup:

We gathered 22 large bags in just the first few blocks. Leaf cleanup truly matters. The leaves clog the drains, add phosphorus pollution to waterways, plus they are slippery for pedestrians. The city does not clean up leaves, and there are no compost bins on 45th Street.

This is just the first work party. More are tentatively scheduled for November 1 and November 7. Please go to our website to sign up or DM me. We’d love the extra help. More details to follow, and dates may change, so an RSVP is essential. If you have high school kids who need to perform community service, this is a great way to put in some hours!
The Sparklers have a new website! It includes an overview of their work, which, as Wallyhood recently reported, includes plans for plant maintenance along 45th Street, including mulch application this fall and weed removal in the spring. You can sign up to work with them, whether one-time or more frequently. Thanks to generous donations, Sparkling Wallingford has collected enough money to cover the costs of the recent plantings on N 45th Street, and is hoping to raise enough to cover the mulch expense. You can donate any amount towards that effort.

Through Seattle’s Adopt A Street program, Sparkling Wallingford has put in enough time to earn a sign. It was recently installed on the corner of N 45th Street and Meridian Avenue N, next to Murphy’s Pub.

Next leaf and trash pickup dates:

  • Sunday, November 1st
  • Saturday, November 7th

Meet-up Location: Wallingford Center at N 45th Street and Wallingford Avenue N

They will provide vests, pickers, gloves, bags, brooms, rakes, and buckets.

Please help spread the word to friends and neighbors. Any questions? Email the organizers.
