Stone Way has certainly been the site of lots and lots of construction over the past several years. Most of it, though, has been associated with buildings being built or torn down along the east or west side, which has mostly impacted pedestrians who have been diverted off the sidewalks in places. Then 2023 saw the start of a very lengthy closure (on the order of a year!) of the block of Stone Way between N 34th and N 35th Streets to facilitate a sewer overflow project.
Well, now there’s more work going on, but this is to actually improve the roadway itself. You may have noticed already, as it was due to kick off the weekend of October 17th. Fremont Neighbor previewed the work back in February, and we reprinted that article here under our sharing agreement. In a nutshell, the work is intended to improve the crossing points for pedestrians at N 36th Street, N 38th Street, and N Allen Place (up near Tutta Bella). (I can personally attest, as both a driver and pedestrian in those areas, that it is rather difficult for drivers to pick out folks on foot trying to cross the street.) SDOT says they are not anticipating any detours for traffic during this work. More information is available here, but the highlights are:
- New marked crosswalks
- Intersection visibility improvements. This is to enable drivers to more easily see crossing pedestrians.
- Pedestrian islands
- Median islands
- Flashing pedestrian crossing signs
- New bike markings
Many people may be wondering if this work will result in a loss of parking. The short answer is no. However, to improve sight lines for drivers entering Stone Way from the side streets, parking prohibitions around the intersections will be more rigidly enforced—which you can glean from the SDOT graphics below.
As to when this work might be completed, SDOT tells me this depends upon the weather. Work on two crossings further up the street, at N 41st Street and N 42nd Street, is slated for 2027, though. So, hopefully before then.
