Wallyhood’s Reclusive New Resident

daranee July 29, 2017 18 Comments

For weeks Wallyhood has been hearing reports of deer spottings. This morning I became one of the lucky few to see our newest resident. During a 7:30 morning coffee run to The Essential Baking Company, I spotted this gal munching on some goodies in my neighbor’s vegetable garden.

Is it the vacant lot on our street that attracts her here? Apparently she’s been spotted there a few times just hanging out. Her presence is certainly welcome.

Henry Mural at Hashtag Recreational Cannabis

daranee January 18, 2017 6 Comments

Wallingford is known for its great murals, and over the summer Ryan Henry Ward did a beauty of one for Hashtag Recreational Cannabis. Wallyhood wrote about Hashtag when it opened in 2015.  In our comments section, some were concerned about the location being close to a private daycare. Most people writing comments were unfazed, however.

Hashtag has now been open nearly two years and I haven’t heard of any issues about the store. In fact, neighbors seem to like them as the classy pot store. I spoke to a resident very close to the store and she confirmed Hashtag is …

Restaurant News – Wallyhood Edition

daranee September 23, 2016 3 Comments

Here is a small list of restaurant changes in our hood.

I snapped this picture of Bar Charlie in the newly finished Bowman Building. It’s not open yet, but it has a Facebook page.

The Brooks Building will be getting a new tenant in the retail space that faces N 35th Street. I saw an application for a liquor license from the Heavy Restaurant Group posted outside. They operate Purple among other restaurants.

Yoroshiku, a favorite of mine when it comes to ramen, will be expanding into the space next door formerly taken by Teahouse Kuan Yin. This information is …

Wallingford Bicycle Excursion – Gasworks Park to Montlake Playfield

daranee September 17, 2016 4 Comments

One of my favorite Wallingford excursions is taking the kids on the bike and going to Montlake Playfield. My route is almost all dedicated trail from my house and so I’m not too worried about the combination of cars and kids and bikes. My five-year old is hitched up to my bike on a Follow Me, and my two-year old rides on a co-pilot child seat.

Montlake Playfield is a hidden gem of a park. The climbing jungle gym is a step up from most parks. It’s high, and you’ll probably want to wait at the bottom of the slide …

Sea Wolf Bakery

daranee August 22, 2016 5 Comments

Seattleites love their secret restaurant openings; see Stop N Shop for example. I got a tip about a hidden French bakery next to Manolin and went to investigate. Located at N 36th and Stone Way the sign for Sea Wolf is pretty nondescript.

I have been waiting years for a French bakery to come to our neighborhood. Now I know we have had some great bakeries that sold croissants over the years, but I’m talking about the type of bakery that sells croissants that you bite into and unleash crispy crumbs everywhere. That sort of place.

 I also know that …

Things heating up on N 34th Street

daranee July 23, 2016 11 Comments

Lower Wallingford is going through quite a change. As we reported in April, the new transfer station is slated to open some time in 2016. In fact, Wallyhood has been reporting on this since 2009. You can trace the development of this project just by looking at those old posts.

Now that I can actually see the space in person rather than on a map or drawing, I’m really impressed. It’s far beyond what I expected.

I think this new transfer station is an example of how the neighborhood community can both advocate for its preservation while also being a  …

Riding on Buses with Kids

daranee May 11, 2016 12 Comments

My family is a lower Wallingford family. A few weeks ago, we packed ourselves into the car to go to Green Lake Library, a favorite of ours. Driving there was awful. It was a sunny day and everyone else decided to go to Green Lake too. We saw a bicyclist who’d clearly just been hit. He was okay but shaken. We decided Green Lake probably wouldn’t be a great place to go via bicycle with our kids.

Driving around looking for parking was crazy. As soon as I headed down a street, someone else in a car would start down …
