Senior Center Breakfasting Again

Erin Leach-Kemon April 19, 2010 Comments are off

After announcing last month that their doors will remain open, the Wallingford Community Senior Center has steadily begun to rebuild.

The center has reached 20 percent of their fundraising goal toward an anonymously donated $25,000 Challenge Grant since ramping up efforts in March. Additionally, they’ve welcomed back two former programs and are gearing up to host a community-wide pancake breakfast later this month.

Kathleen Cromp of the Senior Center tells us that they have reached about $5,000 in donations so far and hope to reach their fundraising target in a few months.  Much of the thanks goes to Wallyhood readers …

Pioneer Square’s neighborhood blog, The New Pioneer Square released an intriguing post yesterday, stating that the Seattle Police Department reports Pioneer Square’s major crime statistics to be comparable to those of Wallingford and Fremont:

According to the Seattle Police Department, the Pioneer Square “west” neighborhood, which includes everything west of 2nd Avenue Extension (not including my side of the street) is on par with North Lake Union (Fremont/Wallingford) in terms of “major crimes” – 630-1718 total incidents per square mile, and is generally lower than the rest of downtown Seattle, which ranges from 1736-7876 total incidents psm.

On Wednesday, Ffej asked us when the Senior Center plans to start accepting donations that will be matched by the Challenge Grant. Christopher Novak, WCSC Board member and Chair of their Communications Committee writes in with the details:

The Wallingford Community Senior Center officially began accepting contributions that will be matched by an anonymous $25,000 Challenge Grant on March 1, 2010.  So, for every dollar raised until we reach $25,000, the challenger will match it with another dollar.  Donations can be sent to:

After much deliberation, it looks like Wallingford’s much-loved Senior Center is here to stay! The Board and executive director have worked to develop a sustainable business model over the past month that they’ll put to use in 2010. The community’s significant financial support and an anonymous resident’s matching challenge grant of $25,000 majorly contributed to keeping their doors open, says the Board. At this time, the center plans to restart select programs in April and to tentatively restore all services by the year’s end.

Mark your calendars for WCSC’s “New Start Celebration” community pancake breakfast …

We just heard word through the “bartender grapevine” that Goldie’s (2121 N 45th St) shut their doors for good last night. There’s some speculation going around as to what might have occurred, but we’re still searching for the facts.
