Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

Holy Pancakes, They’re Back!

Helen October 22, 2010 1 Comment

They’re firing up the griddles, mixing the batter and readying the spatulas over at the Senior Center this Sunday for another Pancake Breakfast!

From 9 AM to 12 PM, it’s a mere $5 for adults and $2.50 for children.  Head down to the basement of the Good Shepherd Center at 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N.  French Toast will also be available for those non-pancake aficionados.

Sigh.  Remember the good old days when these happened every month?…

Ramblin’ in the Rain II

Helen October 17, 2010 2 Comments

Put out for free, or just a good place to hang out?

Big bald eagle guards big pile of boxes.

A teeny garden gnome rock band!

This is usually a spectacular view.

Crossing Pacific St. to the Burke-Gilman Trail is frightening and nearly impossible.

Pity the poor tourists who booked to Ride the Ducks on a day like today.

Ramblin’ in the Rain I

Helen October 16, 2010 3 Comments

This does raise the question of what they have to hide.

Headlights left on.  A very common problem in this weather.

Those snap-together collars never stay on well.

A dry place to sleep in the deluge.  Is this the one who’s given the collar the slip?

So sweet.  The sign says:  “Daddy’s Garden.  No birds allowed.”

Free firewood.  Must have chainsaw.

At 4oth Street and Bagley Ave., as I stand waving my bright orange crossing flag, 4 cars zoom past me.  The 5th one, thankfully, slows down to let me cross.

On the other side of 40th, across from Irwin’s, …

Saunter Down Sunnyside

Helen October 11, 2010 1 Comment

Stella’s owner says she’s been trained to hang out around their yard on a leash since she was a kitten.

I like the juxtaposition of the minivan and the one-person electric vehicle.

This tree has the presence of a mythical being.

I’m sure there’s a story behind this.

September means spiders, spiders everywhere.

(Disclaimer: final 2 spiders were taken on different days, and not on Sunnyside Ave. N.).

Wonders on Woodlawn

Helen October 9, 2010 10 Comments

These look way bigger lying along the ground than standing up.

A sighting of the rare, endangered domestic Garden Gnome.

Wee, wee apple tree bowed down with fruit.

The lushest, greenest, most perfect lawn in the whole neighborhood.  My own comes to mind with sadness.

Can Your Halloween Pin Win?

Helen October 6, 2010 Comments are off

We were trolling through the Wallingford Center in search of mini cupcakes (they are hard to get hold of) when we happened upon this flier about a Halloween Pin Design Contest.

Now, my daughter has a weird knack of winning contests.  She’s won quite a few already as if sheer determination to win is enough.  Her eyes lit up and I could see her planning what to draw . . . .

It’s only fair, though, to have decent competition or this megalomania will get out of hand.  So I’m letting your kids in on the action too.

The top …

Cubes Cubed

Helen October 2, 2010 11 Comments

Okay, I know cars are evil.  They spawn obesity, strip malls, suburbs, social isolation, oil wars, pollution, and the destruction of the atmopshere.

But sometimes, they’re so darn cute!

Witness these darling Nissan Cubes cropping up around the neighborhood.  A trend?
