Jack January 28, 2019 Comments are off

This month’s Meaningful Movie, Starving the Beast, will be shown as usual at the Keystone Church, 5019 Keystone Place N. on Friday, February 1 (the first Friday of the month). Doors open at 6:30. Admission is free, but donations are requested to cover costs. This showing represents a bit of a twofer as MM will also be celebrating its 16th anniversary.

Jim writes:

Orchard Party at Meridian Park on Saturday

Jack January 22, 2019 1 Comment

Even if you aren’t familiar with City Fruit, you’ve undoubtedly seen their handiwork. They are the ones that put the netting over apple trees in our neighborhood in order to save the fruit from insects and other pests until they can harvest it for local food banks. They’ve had a contract with the City to harvest the apples in Meridian Playground, and I think I’ve seen their nets on trees along the Burke Gilman trail.

If you’d like to help this organization out, and at the same time learn a thing or two about pruning, City Fruit is holding an …

EV Charging Stations Slated for Gas Works

Jack January 20, 2019 5 Comments

After a few months soliciting citizen input, City Light is on the verge of installing two electric vehicle (EV) chargers at Gas Works Park. Last Thursday, January 17, an open house was held at the John Stanford School to explain the plans. I headed over there to get the scoop.

City Light plans to install 20 charging stations at 10-15 locations in Seattle according to their EV information webpage. Chargers are already installed on Beacon Hill not far from the light rail station. After signoff by Seattle Parks expected later this month, City Light will work with a contractor to …

Ebanista School Announces Winter Class Lineup

Jack January 18, 2019 Comments are off

A cherry and ebony toolbox created as a student project last Fall.

Note: Anyone who thinks they might be interested in Ebanista is invited to attend an open house on Saturday from 2 to 3 PM.

Last Fall, the Ebanista School of Fine Woodworking opened its doors with its first lineup of classes as Ben wrote about here. While the school is located by Green Lake near Gregg’s Cycles (not our usual beat), its owner, Jonathan Cohen, has been a Wallingford resident for over 40 years. The school, in Cohen’s words, was “founded to bring a school capable of offering …

Singer, Songwriter, Neighbor: Linda Waterfall Dies at 69

Jack January 17, 2019 2 Comments

We received word from a reader recently that eminent Wallingford resident Linda Waterfall has died. Linda was a singer and songwriter of some renown who passed away on January 8 after a long illness according to her website. She was 69.

Waterfall’s career spanned several decades — from the seventies until the present. While her Wikipedia page lists her as an “American folk musician,” she described her music as having jazz, blues, rock and classical influences as well. During her long career, she produced an impressive 14 albums beginning with Mary’s Garden in 1977. Her final album, Hometown Girl, was …

Zoo Announces Urban Carnivore Project

Jack January 6, 2019 10 Comments

As most readers are aware, there have been numerous coyote sightings in the neighborhood over the past few months. I wrote about some of them back in November and December. In that more recent post, I quoted an email from the zoo indicating that they would shortly be starting an Urban Carnivore Project accessible on their webpage.

I recently received an email from Robert Long, Senior Conservation Scientist at the zoo informing me that the project website has now gone live. In broad terms, the objective of the project is to document and study “how carnivores live and interact with …

Wallyhood: Top Ten Stories of 2018

Jack January 2, 2019 Comments are off

As I did for 2016 and 2017, I’ve compiled a list of Wallyhood’s top ten stories from 2018 using this site’s analytics.  The stories below are ranked using page views, and while some of our forum posts are pretty highly viewed, I haven’t included them since they are not really stories. To qualify for this list, a story had to have been written in 2018, so older stories that may have gained a lot page views in 2018 don’t count.

In reviewing my lists from the past two years, I was surprised to note that crime stories have not figured …
