Creating People-Friendly Streets

Kimberly February 9, 2014 1 Comment

Are you concerned about the accidents involving pedestrians along Stone Way? Or perhaps you, like me, are a devotee of little free libraries? Do you want to help create a Wallingford that is people-centric?

If any of these sentiments describe you, the Wallingford/Green Lake Greenways folks would love to meet you! Cathy emailed to invite the neighborhood to their next meeting:

WHAT: Meet people in your neighborhood who care as much as you do about safe and healthy streets.

WHEN: Tuesday, February 11 from 6-7:30 p.m.

WHERE: Mosaic Community Coffeehouse in Wallingford 4401 2nd Ave NE

At 7:30 p.m. we’ll …

Winter is for Pruners

Kimberly February 6, 2014 1 Comment

The long, cold days of winter anesthetize my soul. Apparently they do the same to fruit trees, because we are entering prime pruning season: the time of year when it won’t damage your tree’s essence if you trim back its branches.

Of course, with fruit trees you really want to prune correctly so that you encourage fruit production and reduce the chances of introducing disease. Which makes it lucky that the fine folks at FECO (the Freeway Estates Community Orchard) are offering a workshop this weekend on pruning young fruit trees. Ruth supplies us with the details:

Young Fruit Tree …

Teach Your Kids to Pitch In

Kimberly February 4, 2014 2 Comments

FamilyWorks Food Bank and Resource Center’s new volunteer coordinator, Elizabeth Ralston, (a mom of two herself) has frequently heard from other parents about the difficulty of finding volunteer work suitable for children. To fill this need, FamilyWorks has launched a “third Saturday” family volunteering program that connects families with projects that will benefit FamilyWorks customers. Email Elizabeth to join her email list and be alerted to future volunteer opportunities.

This month’s project is a food drive at the Wallingford QFC on February 15th. Since children have short attention spans, each shift is only one hour long. FamilyWorks needs six people …

Proposed Permanent (?!) Fix for Metro

Kimberly February 1, 2014 2 Comments

Every couple of years we post about proposed cuts to Metro bus service and how those cuts will impact Wallingford. The last round of proposed cuts had the ever popular Route 26 slated for shuttering, which resulted in numerous vocal transit riders (my family included) barraging beleaguered Metro staff people at their “open house” sessions at QFC. Thankfully Route 26 was saved from the chopping block. Lower Wallingford in particular breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Knowing that this time of year is when the folks at Metro usually start talking about budget cuts and major service reductions, I have …

New Family Tours/Events at Local Public Schools

Kimberly January 19, 2014 Comments are off

I am so confused about which part of the neighborhood is going to which school next year, and I am probably not alone.  But school tours are coming up! Not sure what your reference school is? Try the SPS address locator.

B.F. Day Elementary is offering parent visitations/tours from 9:30-10:30 am on Thursdays January 23rd and February 13th. No RSVP is required, but you are requested to check-in at the office upon arrival. These will be the only tours.

On January 23rd B.F. Day will also be hosting an Open House and Family Night Dinner from 6:00-7:30 pm. Children are …

Young Couple Injured in Stone Way Pedestrian Collision

Kimberly January 14, 2014 47 Comments

On Saturday evening, two pedestrians in a crosswalk were hit by an automobile while crossing Stone Way at 41st Street. The pedestrians are a young married couple, Zach and Ashley Adair, who were on their way to a performance at Stone Soup Theater. They suffered multiple, significant injuries and were rushed to Harborview, where Zach is still recovering in the ICU. Ashley, despite receiving a head wound that required eight staples to close, has already been discharged. At home, she now uses a hospital bed to aid her recovery.

According to their friend Zac Eckstein, the driver of the …

Here We Come A’Wassailing

Kimberly January 10, 2014 Comments are off

If you don’t have plans to watch the Big Game on Saturday but you’d still like to experience the thrill of watching athletic people caper through the mud, head to Meridian Park for the Sound & Fury Morris Dancers’ Annual Apple Wassail.

At 2:30 pm on Saturday, Morris dancers from Seattle and Portland will bring a bit of English holiday cheer to Wallingford with traditional dance, song and a blessing of the apple trees. Apple trees are sacred to Morris dancers because they provide the fruit from which cider is made. Morris dancers need few excuses to dance, sing and …
