Baby It’s Cold Outside

Kimberly December 15, 2013 2 Comments

Our recent and prolonged cold snap made me wish there was more I could do to help folks who sleep outside or those who can’t afford to heat their homes to a comfortable temperature. I talked with Jake Weber and Elizabeth Ralston at FamilyWorks, our neighborhood food bank and resource center, for advice about how to help in meaningful ways.

If you’re the sort of person who likes to have something on hand to give to people sleeping out in the elements, Elizabeth recommends practical cold weather items: socks, hand warmers, blankets, gloves/mittens, hats, coats and cups of soup. Bus …

Suspect Arrested in Burke-Gilman Murder

Kimberly December 2, 2013 5 Comments

Back in October, we reported the sad story of 26-year-old Jowanna Gooden’s body being found along the Burke-Gilman trail. Last week, Seattle Police Department detectives arrested the suspected murderer, 32-year-old Renton resident Uriel “Duane” Boyd. He was in part tracked down because he answered a cell phone call from the 4000 block of Bagley Avenue on the night of the murder.

SPD reports that Jowanna’s murder was not random and that they believe she knew her killer.

Boyd was booked on murder charges as well as drug charges. He has been previously convicted of drug offences as well as burglary, …

Backyard Mushrooms and More Urban Orchard Fun

Kimberly November 14, 2013 Comments are off

Ruth from the Freeway Estates Community Orchard (FECO) let us know that fungi fun will be mushrooming at FECO this weekend when mushroom coaches help future backyard mycologists (that’s you!) learn about the art of mushroom growing.

Sound Transit recently removed two beautiful Scarlet Oak trees near Roosevelt High School in order to make way for light rail. Rather than let that wood go to waste (and since oak is perfect for growing several different varieties of edible mushrooms), FECO teamed up with Roosevelt Neighborhood Association volunteers to salvage the logs and convert them into mushroom logs.

These logs will …

Pizza, Gelato and Solar

Kimberly November 4, 2013 16 Comments

My family often celebrates Friday with “pizza and game night,” ordering from our local Pagliacci at Stone and 40th. I’ve been watching the remodel of the store with curiosity, wondering if one day we could make use of the dining room – pizza being one of the few dining out experiences that consistently goes well with young kids. Last week, I noticed that solar panels had been installed on the roof, and I could no longer contain my enthusiasm. Luckily, marketing guru Shelley McNulty answered her phone and gave me the details about the new and improved Stone…

I Dig Doug’s Voter’s Guide

Kimberly October 27, 2013 16 Comments

You should have received your ballot in the mail, and you have until November 5th to get it back into the mail or a handy ballot drop box.

This year we don’t get to vote for Obama, gay marriage or pot. But that doesn’t mean it’s a slow news cycle! Washington has the opportunity to be the first state in the nation to label genetically modified foods (take that, Monsanto!) if we pass Initiative 522 (and accomplish what California couldn’t last year). There’s also a contentious school board race, the mayoral race, public financing of campaigns and a chance …

I Can Haz Parody

Kimberly October 21, 2013 9 Comments

There are a lot of creative people living in Wallingford, and a lot of smart ones, as well as a lot of people who love cats. But only one Wallingford resident could be described as the creative genius of cat videos, and that’s Will Braden: creator of Henri, Le Chat Noir.

If you are not yet acquainted with Henri, take a moment to watch the embedded video, which is my personal favorite. (And yes, I am considering how to disguise myself as Crippling Self Doubt for Halloween this year).

You don’t have to be a connoisseur of cat videos to …

Two Chances to Press Cider This Weekend

Kimberly October 17, 2013 2 Comments

Nothing says autumn like some hand-cranked cider! This weekend you have two opportunities to enjoy some fall fun by crushing apples the old-fashioned way.

The Freeway Estates Community Orchard (FECO) is hosting their third annual cider press, which features an old-fashioned cider press (aka kid magnet), apple bobbing and a scavenger hunt. Head on over to FECO between 2 pm and 5 pm on Saturday to meet neighbors and partake of the apple harvest.

If Saturday’s event whets your appetite for cider making, you are in luck! On Sunday, City Fruit will be hosting a cider press along the Burke …
