The Little Orchard That Could

Kimberly August 11, 2013 4 Comments

What do you do if you live near a strip of WSDOT-owned land that abuts I-5, is overrun by invasive plants and rapidly fills with unclaimed dog excrement? In Wallingford, you might introduce yourself to your neighbors, petition the government and dream bigger.

That’s exactly what a group of friends and neighbors did at the Freeway Estates, starting back in 2010. Now, the land they have reclaimed from blackberries and dog poop has grown into a community meeting space which hosts an annual cider press, a neighborhood block party, and many smaller, less formal affairs. As volunteers continue to clear …

(Little Free) Book Lust

Kimberly August 10, 2013 8 Comments

To my complete delight, I discovered a new (blue!) little free library in lower Wallingford recently. This prompted me to visit each of Wallingford’s Little Free Libraries (or at least the ones known to this blog). I was surprised to find NONE between 40th and 45th Streets. Can this really be true? Please leave a comment if you know of one that’s missing!

For more on Wallingford’s LFLs, including addresses, see our previous post.

Backyard Bard

Kimberly August 2, 2013 Comments are off

Serendipity struck last weekend when my family and I decided to head out for an evening of bike-riding practice. We got to Wallingford Playfield, where we noticed a large gathering of people assembled in lawn chairs and looking expectantly in the same direction. What was going on? We wandered over to discover that we had arrived just in time for Shakespeare in the park!

Serendipity can strike you this weekend, because the merry players of Greenstage will be returning to Wallingford Playfield this Saturday at 7 pm. Greenstage’s Backyard Bard will perform a one hour, four person interpretation of The …

Mural-rific 45th Street

Kimberly July 14, 2013 1 Comment

I’m guessing that murals must be hip, because along with mustaches and fedoras, I am seeing them everywhere! With 45th Street becoming an outdoor art gallery, I thought I would document what I discovered between Aurora and 1-5.

Meet Julia’s New Neighbor, Seattle Espresso

Kimberly July 10, 2013 7 Comments

After sampling some delicious shortbread, Wallyreader Frankie tipped us off to the grand re-opening of the coffee shop/bakery adjacent to Julia’s. Hungry for some baked goods, I stopped by the new Seattle Espresso and nibbled a tasty chocolate/espresso/salted caramel shortbread cookie while friendly manager Scott gave me the low-down.

Seattle Espresso serves Lighthouse coffee, and every customer receives a free mini-shortbread with their coffee purchase. They will be expanding to include more organic coffee options and Italian ices for those hot summer days (we hope!). Most of their baked goods are made on-site, including the shortbread cookies and their variety …

TheLAB Brings Crossfit to Wallingford

Kimberly June 27, 2013 Comments are off

While at Gasworks Park, I recently watched in amazement as an average-looking guy inverted himself and proceeded to do handstand push-ups. Several of them. Which I can tell you is 100% more than I could do without ending up in a neck brace.

I suspect I might not be the only person in Wallingford whose muscles could use some beefing up. Which might be why theLAB Strength and Conditioning recently opened a new fitness studio at 36th and Interlake. TheLab owner Lindsey wrote:

TheLAB Strength & Conditioning – Eastlake CrossFit is a 7,000 sq/ft. fitness coaching facility, equipped with men’s …

Make Some New Kinder-Friends

Kimberly June 19, 2013 1 Comment

Intrepid play date organizer Joe, father of one current BF Day student and a soon-to-be kindergartner, wrote to invite all incoming BF Day kindergartners to meet for some play time this summer:

It would be great if our kiddos could get together this summer to get to know each other before the big “K.” How about we give the kiddos some play time on Thursday, June 27th, from 10:30 until 12:30 or whenever. Let’s meet at the B.F. Day lower playground right next to the school.

Joe is also keeping a list of incoming families so that he can alert …
