Halloween decoration giveaway this Saturday

Kim October 21, 2016 2 Comments

Santa Sharon has a deal for you.

For more than 40 years, Sharon Ehrig decorated her home on Woodlawn Avenue North with thousands of Christmas lights and other decorations.  Her home was so brightly decorated that it was on the old-time Metro bus tour of Christmas lights for 10 years.  And for 18 years, Ehrig dressed in a Santa suit and sat on her front porch, rocking for hours as visitors passed by.

But all that ended in 2011 after Ehrig broke her wrist and her husband, Fred, died two years later.  No more lights.

Calling all readers, writers and contributors…

Kim September 30, 2016 5 Comments

In this day and age of online interactions, it’s oh so commonplace to collaborate with people that you have never meet in person. And so it is at Wallyhood. Many of our staff have never met the neighbors who read our blog and help make Wallyhood what it is. And vice versa.

We want to change that. Writers, come meet your editors! Editors, come meet your writers! And readers, come meet the folks who put Wallyhood together day in and day out.

Please join us for a Wallyhood appreciation party at Murphy‘s Pub on Wednesday, October 12 from 7- 9 …

Tourist Helicopters Over Wallingford

Kim July 3, 2016 16 Comments

This is a guest post submitted by Kit Lewis, Wallingford resident of 27 years.

Hey, what’s with all these helicopters lately?  Have you noticed?  Annoyingly loud, alarmingly low, and astonishingly frequent.

We Wallingford residents know that on the 4th of July, our skies will be abuzz with hovering helicopters jostling for position to get that perfect view of the Lake Union fireworks from above.  One day a year was what we used to expect.  But nowadays it’s very different.  There are choppers roaring loudly overhead all day long, every single day.  Today I counted 8 very-low-flying helicopters zooming directly over …

Celebrate the original “Brexit” at Gas Works this Monday

Kim July 1, 2016 11 Comments

Unlike Brexit, things moved swiftly following the vote for Independence on July 2, 1776, formalized by the adoption of the Declaration of Independence just two days later. The Founding Fathers were so pleased with themselves that John Adams foretold of celebrations for generations to come that would include “Pomp and Parade…Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other”. But because Adams believed the holiday should be occur on July 2, he was known to turn down invitations to attend July 4 parties in protest. These were revolutionary folk, folks.

As America celebrates …

How’s Wallyhood 2.0 going so far?

Kim June 28, 2016 26 Comments

As many of you are aware, Wallyhood was “reborn” in the beginning of April, following the outcry of Jordan’s attempt to “sign off” from the blog back in January.

Since then, we’ve had 4-5 volunteer rotating weekly editors and over a dozen volunteer writers help keep the lights on! Thank you to everyone who has stepped up to contribute to this community resource, during a time when it seems like just about everyone is over-committed or simply too busy.

It seems like a good time to check in with you, readers. So please tell us, is this still the Wallyhood …

Happy Meow-ther’s Day!

Kim May 8, 2016 1 Comment

Looking for something different to do with Mom that is guaranteed to lower everyone’s stress level? Treat her to a day out at Seattle Meowtropolitan, Seattle’s first cat cafe, where today’s visit is 15% off and includes 50 minutes with kitties and a cafe beverage!

I had a chance to pounce in mid-afternoon this week, after bemusedly walking by for months.  While booking my online appointment, I was advised that I may not get a lot of interaction as 2 PM is prime cat nap time. Regardless, entering the tranquil lounge was a welcome respite from noisy construction outdoors and …
