Madi Carlson has only been in Seattle three years, but has found the perfect spot in Wallingford. She spends most of her time riding around town on a bike laden with her two small boys and writing about biking with kids.

Have you found or lost a bike?

Madi September 6, 2014 2 Comments

Update: The found bike below has been reunited with its owner! But keep reading to learn how to register your bike and check SPD’s list of recovered bikes.

We discovered an abandoned bike on our street this morning. Meanwhile, neighbors around the corner reported their bike stolen from the back porch. I sent over a picture, but it’s not the same bike! What are the odds? Well, pretty high, probably. KING 5 reports there are 200 bikes still unclaimed in SPD evidence warehouse. If you’re very recently missing a large black bike, get in touch with me, but if you’re …

Tutu Tuesday at Irwin’s

Madi April 14, 2014 1 Comment

I just discovered Tutu Tuesday at the Wallingford Irwin’s Bakery and Cafe (2123 N 40th St). I’m late to the ball–it’s been happening since November. It started with one Halloween costume and grew from there, including several handmade tutus and a lovely rainbow tutu donated by a customer. There’s even a contingent of tiny regulars whose parents bring them clad in tutus, though I wasn’t lucky enough to see them this Tuesday.

And that’s all there is to it! No special discount for showing up in a tutu, but don’t let that deter you. Tutu Tuesday adds a dash of …

New Stop Lines on 42nd

Madi September 14, 2013 7 Comments

A team from SDOT just repainted three stop lines along NE 42nd Street–eastbound at 2nd and Latona and westbound at Thackeray.

Wallyhood first shared the need for new lines in July’s Stop Sign Ignored about this KIRO piece.

I wasn’t the only resident to excitedly run outside to watch the work and talk to the crew. A neighbor reports they left with a “We’ll see you when we’re back to redo the crosswalks!”…

Kidical Mass SPOKESPEOPLE Ride to Libraries

Madi February 14, 2013 1 Comment

Is there such a thing as too many libraries in a one-hour period? I don’t think so, but we’ll find out Sunday, March 24, 2013 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. when Spokespeople leads a Kidical Mass bicycle ride to several local Little Free Libraries and Sundays are Special at the Wallingford Branch. Meet in front Wallingford Center (1815 N 45th St, Seattle, WA).

From Spokespeople:

This is a perfect ride for children! Just three miles with minimal hills on Greenways and other slow family-friendly streets.

Riders of all ages and abilities are welcome! We’ll be joined by new Ride Leader …

Sandwich shop coming to Doggy Style space

Madi November 13, 2012 13 Comments

Doggy Style East Coast Hot Dog stand came and went, but from its ashes (4455 Stone Way N) a sandwich shop is growing. I noticed someone working inside the space on Monday and met Pat, local to the neighborhood, who hopes to have his sandwich shop–name TBD–open in four weeks.

I, for one, adore walk-up/bike-up food establishments (no need to lock up the bike or unload the kiddos) and while I regrettably never made it to Doggy Style, I can’t wait to visit this soon-to-be sandwichery. …

Kidical Mass to Wallingford Greenway Celebration

Madi June 14, 2012 2 Comments

Calling all biking kids and their families! Hop on a bike train to Saturday’s Wallingford Greenway Par-tay in the form of this month’s Kidical Mass ride.

From Totcycle:

Depart NE Green Lake, on the grass around the playground at the Green Lake Community Center, and we’ll follow this route.

Meet at 4pm, ride at 4:15pm, arrive for Ribbon Cutting, Kid Parade, road chalk, hot dogs, bike blenders, and GELATO from D’Ambrosio Gelato in Ballard and Cap Hill! Marco and Enzo, the family gelato team, make the bestest, most authenticest, and most generousest gelato in town.

Hope to see you …

Get to know your traffic circle

Madi October 12, 2011 2 Comments

Walking home Saturday I met my neighbor, Deborah Niedermeyer, who was tending our traffic circle. I realized I don’t know anything about the traffic circle, other than that the kids squeal when we bike around it an extra time.

I’m sure each traffic circle in Wallingford has a very interesting history, but here’s the story of my favorite one at 2nd Ave NE & NE 43rd St: in 1992, Deborah took pictures to document fender benders (before the days of digital cameras, mind you), wrote the grant, and in 1999–a week after returning from seven years in Alaska–finally got the …
