Summer Camp Open at John Stanford International School – LSA

Megan Dulgar Okabayashi May 31, 2024 Comments are off

As a parent of a soon-to-be kindergartener and a soon-to-be second grader (who works more than a full time job), my family approaches the warmer months with mixed emotions. There is a frenetic energy in the air. While the kids begin to taste freedom, a lump of fear develops in my belly over how I will balance parenthood and work without the certainty and structure of school. For my family, relief comes in the form of a local summer camp hosted by Latona School Associates, which operates out of John Stanford International School on 2nd Avenue NE. The summer is…

Cascadia Pharmacy Opens at Wallingford Center

After a series of Pharmacy closings leaving the neighborhood wondering what the path forward looked like, we have some good news! Cascadia Pharmacy, a new independent pharmacy, is opening in the former Pharmaca/Medly space inside the Wallingford Center. It belongs to a group of independent pharmacies across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, all called Cascadia, but independently owned.

In addition to pharmacy services, Cascadia Pharmacy Wallingford will offer many of the supplements and homeopathic products that the former Pharmaca at the same location carried, as well as specialty gifts, with a focus on locally sourced …

Morris Dancers greet May at Gasworks Park

Megan Dulgar Okabayashi April 30, 2024 Comments are off

There are a few things this neighborhood can count on to keep us seasonally aware. Body-painted bike riders trickling in from Fremont in June, a line around the corner from Murphy’s each March…and the Morris Dancers greeting May.

Kimberly wrote to Wallyhood to share the specifics about this year’s May Day dancing:

The Sound and Fury Morris Dancers, Seawitch Women’s Morris, and the Mossyback Morris Men will be greeting the sunrise at Gasworks Park on May Day morning this Wednesday, May 1. Dancing begins around 5:45 am and ends around 7:00am. There will also be the singing of traditional English …

Local watering hole, Russell’s Tavern celebrates 10 years in Wallingford! If you can snag a seat at the bar, Russell’s is the perfect place to meet a friend or to read a few chapters of a book while engaging in chatter with friendly bartenders and neighbors. The experience is enhanced further with an order of pickled vegetables or sardines with sweet piquillo pepper . This month, Russell’s will celebrate their 10th anniversary with oysters, bubbles, cocktails and tunes, which sounds even sweeter.  The party starts at 4:00pm on Saturday, March 23rd. Pop on to North 41st Street and Stone Way…

Megan Dulgar Okabayashi March 6, 2024 Comments are off

Many parents know the trials of finding summer camps to provide care for young kids. Parent text threads explode reminding each other to be hovering over the mouse on your computer refreshing at exactly 6pm when registration for this camp or that opens up. Stress and guilt and great expense follow.

Just outside of Wallingford, the UW Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences Lab (I-LABS) is now looking for native English speaking kids ages 4-5 to participate in a Free Language Camp as part of their research into the benefits of dual language exposure.
