City Grown Land Search 2013

Melody January 24, 2013 Comments are off

Mowing the lawn is so 2012. Weeding is a drag. Planting massive beds of peonies just to have flocks of feral chickens peck them to a purple pulp is beyond depressing. So what do you do? Think outside the garden box and ponder a partnership with City Grown, our urban farming wonder friends. City Grown is looking for new places to grow food, and their Land Partners pretty much have it made: a share of the fresh produce grown each season, no obligation to maintain the garden area, and the joy of gazing upon flourishing vegetation! (The farmers are quite…

More Gypsy Cafe News…

Melody September 28, 2012 2 Comments

Oops! Time for a little mea culpa-ing here at Wallyhood:

We had some great comments and responses to the post about the closing of the Gypsy Café on Stone Way—thanks for reading! Seems I got some of my facts scrambled, but the folks at Evo and Evolution Properties provided us with some more information so read on for corrections and clarifications to our earlier post:

Evo Seattle Ski & Snowboard Shop is moving into the Fremont Collective building in October.  Their headquarters and evo.com will stay at the current location. Two fabulous restaurants, Joule and The Whale Wins, will be…

Gypsy Cafe Closing as of September 29th

Melody September 21, 2012 8 Comments

The Gypsy Cafe on Stone Way is so….Wallingford. It’s chill, eclectic, comfy, and full of comforting coffee smells and good music. But it’s going away as of next week, and that makes us Wallyhoodians very sad indeed. A quick conversation with Rachel, the lovely barista on the clock this foggy Friday morning, told us that local snowboard and ski and all-around cool company Evo bought the building and is planning a remodel. No concrete information yet on what will be housed in the new space, though there are whispers of a new cafe and a bike repair shop. I’m hoping…

“Pugilist Specialist” Review

Melody May 14, 2012 Comments are off

On Thursday, we told you about Pugilist Specialist, an independent theater production that opened last night at Stone Soup Theater. Running Friday and Saturday nights through May 19th, Pugilist tells the story of four Marines preparing to complete a “black ops” mission in an unnamed Middle Eastern war zone.

The set is very simple, a soft soundscape moves over the dialogue and silences, and the characters frequently stare straight ahead at the audience while speaking. The message is communicated through stark, fast and striking language: “Victory forgives dishonesty.” “Secrets are my armor.” “I stand not with the advocates of disunion.” …
