‘Pugilist Specialist’ at Stone Soup

Melody May 10, 2012 Comments are off

This coming weekend, The Wrecking Crew Theater Company will bring their production of Adriano Shaplin’s Pugilist Specialist to Wallingford’s Stone Soup Theater. Described as a “piercing look at our nation’s military power through the eyes of a group of soldiers assigned to perform a black-ops mission,” Pugilist promises to step outside traditional theatrical boundaries and engage spectators on an exploration of “freedom, gender equality, power and what it means to be a soldier in the modern age.”

A core mission of this company is to present the “riskier” side of theater–that which provokes the audience and prompts response across the …

Dominica – Charting a Future for Paradise

Melody April 16, 2012 Comments are off

As an aspiring writer, I spend a good portion of my daily brain power plotting and scheming my way out of the 9 to 5 and into lucrative authorhood. Don’t get me wrong, I like my job (Hi Boss!) but who doesn’t dream of turning a passion into a profession? One Wallingford woman has done just this: by the power of her artistic skill, powerful intelligence and outgoing personality (and a whole lot of work), Wyatt Bardouille’s documentary film “Dominica – Charting a Future for Paradise,” has earned a well-deserved place at the Africa World Documentary Film Festival.

When I …

Need to exorcise some dramatic characters that have been swimming around in your head for a …

Breakfast in Tangletown

Melody March 18, 2012 8 Comments

Wander into the northern corners of Wallingford on a weekend morning and you’ll find some mighty fine smells in the Tangletown air. We know how to do breakfast over here. From good ol’ Eggs Benedict to vegan donuts, from fine teas and scones that would have Princess Kate skipping down N. 56th Street, to Pacific Northwest twists on current trends in haute breakfast cuisine, we got it. And we’re not afraid to share.

The Publican, ahem, The Burgundian is a classy, laid-back public house owned and operated by the folks who brought Brouwer’s Cafe to Fremont. Housed in the spot …

Stone Soup Theater’s ‘The Young Man from Atlanta’

Melody February 23, 2012 Comments are off

There’s a bit of the voyeur in all of us, isn’t there? A draw to those certain pieces of literature that offer a glimpse into someone else’s private tragedy or sorrow. Horton Foote’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play gives the audience more than a glimpse–its characters break down the human condition blatantly, emphatically and simply. I could touch their pain and feel the tension. I wanted to move the few feet from my seat onto the set of the Kidder family living room and tell them that it was going to be okay, but I didn’t think that would work with the…

Bust out those bikes and gear up for spring, people. Recycled Cycles has opened up a new shop in lower Fremont/Wallingford (Frollingmont?). The ever-reliable Seattle Bike Blog alerted us to the happy news that one of Seattle’s most talked-about bike shops is now in the ‘hood.

Since 1994, Recycled Cycles has provided bike-happy locals with reliable repair services, solid used and new cycles and super cool duds and accessories.  This new, smaller shop is located next to their warehouse on North 35th Street–close to the Burke Gilman, which is a great thing to remember when you have a flat tire …
