Neighborhood Matching Funds 2012 Deadlines

Melody February 2, 2012 Comments are off

Seattle is a really cool place to live. We have an incredibly vibrant collection of community-driven projects, where residents act on their passions for sustainability, public art and usable public space to create everything from public orchards to street murals to ballfields.  Sometimes, these projects require more resources than the participants can offer up, and this is where Neighborhood Matching Funds grants provide a huge leg up.

There are 3 levels of grants within the NMF program, each designed for different sizes of community projects and requiring varying amounts of planning and effort. The Large Projects Fund awards up to …

Hansen’s Florist Grand Opening on January 25th

Melody January 23, 2012 3 Comments

We alerted Wallyhood readers to the opening of Hansen’s Florist back in December. Business is blooming and the Hansen’s folks are introducing themselves to their Wallingford neighbours via an Open House on January 25th. Stop by to check out the flowers, enjoy refreshments and take home a free balloon for the kiddos!

Hansen’s Florist is a family-owned business that has served Seattle since 1945. This new Wallingford location replaces the Fremont store, and the Georgetown location is still going strong down on 4th Avenue South. See the company’s website for more details.

Open House details: Wednesday, January 25th, from 1:30 …

UW Experimental College Classes in Wallingford

Melody January 10, 2012 Comments are off

Are you bored to tears by echos of over-used and under-fulfilled New Year’s Resolutions to “lose 20 pounds,” “stay in touch with old friends,” and “practice simple acts of kindness,” etc, etc? Me too. A few years ago, I decided to make yearly resolutions that would embrace my most intense and far-out wishes for self-improvement, and lo and behold: our fair city offered classes for most of these seemingly random goals. One awesome source for courses right here in Wallinford is the UW Experimental College.

Winter quarter at the Experimental College can help you brush off that dusty sewing machine …

Alexander Technique in Wallingford

Melody December 16, 2011 4 Comments

Back in my ballet-dancing days, I heard a lot about Alexander Technique but never pursued it until a recent serious injury sent my entire body in a general state of Wonk. Now in my mid-30s, I’m re-teaching myself to climb stairs, to bike and to walk without looking like the love child of a chicken and Buster Keaton.  As I searched for new ways to improve integration of my body and brain, I jumped at the chance to explore Alexander Technique for Wallyhood and betook myself to Jeanne Barrett’s Wallingford practice, Alexander Technique Center Seattle.

Alexander Technique is best described …

On Saturday, November 19th, come to the Woodland Park Zoo’s Annual Turkey Toss and enjoy the spectacle as Seattle’s more exotic residents chow down on fresh, raw turkeys. From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., zoo attendants feed the coolest carnivorous creatures juicy Thanksgiving treats in an ongoing effort to promote natural animal behavior and provide visitors with an opportunity to participate in the daily lives of lions and dragons and wolves. Oh my.

COST: Turkey Toss is …

Wllm Shkspr @ Stne Sp Thtr

Melody November 5, 2011 6 Comments

It’s officially fall in Seattle, and I need some official entertainment.  It’s cold, I’m grumpy and I defy the person who tries to make me giggle under such conditions.  So why, you may ask, do I put on my crankypants and thither to the theater? To see some Shakespeare?  Because this stuff is awesome.

From November 4th – 27th, Stone Soup Theater and Sound Theater Company present “The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (Abridged),” an evening expertly designed to make you crack up, taunt the actors and jump out of your seat screaming “Get thee to a nunnery!”  Seriously. This …
