Stone Way Needs to Be Safe to Cross – Join a Community Cross-Walkathon Protest

Julie Martin November 6, 2023 1 Comment

This post comes to us from neighbor Tracy Timmons-Gray.

About thirty minutes after my 67- year old mother left my apartment after we had dinner together on the evening of Friday, October 20, she called me, crying.

I asked her what was wrong, and she told me about how she was almost hit by two cars while walking the cross-walk at 40th and Stone Way to get to the bus stop in front of Emerald City Athletics.

As she crossed the street when the walk light was on, she faced a line of cars on 40th that were …

Wallingford-based nonprofit Balo USA is hosting its second annual Balo Bash fundraiser tonight, Friday October 20 from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm at OmCulture, and there are still tickets available. You can read more about Balo’s mission, working to support impoverished women and children, in last year’s Wallyhood.

Balo Bash 2022 was a hit, and now it’s time for another festive evening—including dinner, drinks, silent auction, dessert derby, wine raffle and—new this year—a boutique featuring specialty items made by Balo participants.

You can preview and bid on silent auction items here. And there are exciting new items that will be …

News from our neighbor, Dance Fremont…

Dance Fremont needs your help! Since 1996, Dance Fremont has been a part of our
community at 4015 Stone Way N. While their permanent studio is being renovated,
they’ve moved to a temporary location at 8420 Greenwood Ave N.

Dance Fremont is working hard to inspire a lifelong love of dance in each student in an
inclusive atmosphere full of joy and creativity. They’re in danger of not being able to
provide meaningful scholarships to students with financial need. With an important goal
of $30,000 by Giving Tuesday, Dance Fremont is rallying our community …

Neighbor Connection – Lincoln Links

Julie Martin October 12, 2023 Comments are off

This post comes to us from John Nicon, neighbor at University House.

Two noteworthy Wallingford institutions, 90 years apart in age, but right across the street from each other have formed a new relationship. Lincoln High School and University House, ERA Living’s premier retirement home, have formed “LINCOLN LINKS” to share their resources and activities.

Developed in 1997 by the University of Washington Retirement Association and ERA Living, University House has become home for many retired UW professors and staff. They bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with other residents, and now with their neighbor. Lincoln students …

Historic Seattle, the city’s top preservation advocacy and education organization, has awarded Historic Wallingford its 2023 Community Advocacy Award!

Each year, Historic Seattle hosts the Preservation Celebration to support its mission to save meaningful places that foster lively communities. At the event, honorees are also recognized with awards for their achievements in historic preservation in categories such as Best Preservation Project or Outstanding Stewardship.

Here’s what they had to say about our neighborhood champion:

Historic Wallingford has been instrumental in creating a historic district, organizing walking tours, hosting educational events, and advocating for the protection of historic buildings and …

Reminder: Join us Tues, Oct 10 to discuss the future of Wallyhood

Julie Martin October 7, 2023 Comments are off

We posted The End of Wallyhood? on September 20, 2023 and received responses from many of you imploring us to keep the blog alive and a number of RSVPs to our meeting next week. Thank you! We are glad to know the blog has been a meaningful part of your Wallingford community experience. We are also grateful for the suggestions for change and ideas for improvement.

Now, back to those RSVPs…without your help, we cannot create a new vision and carry it forward. Without more writers and creators, we cannot keep it alive. As a reminder, none of us four …

The end of Wallyhood?

Julie Martin September 20, 2023 6 Comments

Have you ever thought of writing a post for the Wallyhood blog? Or, maybe you have had an idea and wanted to get the word out to the community? Or, perhaps you have questions about strange happenings in the neighborhood that you’d like to see investigated?

Why are we asking these questions?

We editors feel we are at a critical juncture and are debating if the blog should continue. If you glance over the past several months of stories, you will see that the vast majority of stories have been written by a very small number of writers – primarily …
