Sharon came to Seattle sixteen years ago to attend the University of Washington Law School and has been here ever since. House hunting brought her to Wallingford – the tree lined beauty of 40th just couldn’t be beat. Since then, she has practiced law, written some short stories, taken a detour into project management, and started a family. She currently works for a large Redmond software company and has moved to another home in Wallingford with Scott, their two children, and cat. She came to write for Wallyhood through her friend Jordan.

Meet Sounders’ Marshall in Wallingford

Sharon August 9, 2010 Comments are off

Soccer nation is alive and kickin’ in Seattle. World Cup fever had folks watching games at all hours, in pubs all around town. And now the Seattle Sounders are on a four-game winning streak (did everyone see Montero and Fernandez light up the pitch on Sunday night against Houston), making them fourth in the West, tied for fifth overall in MLS, and most importantly, squarely back in playoff contention. To top it off, a late header from the newly acquired midfielder, Alvaro Fernandez, helped them advance to the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.

So if you’re a Sounders …

Sports, Singles, and Sun

Seems like the old saying is true. It ain’t summer in Seattle ’til after the 4th. So as our long-lost friend finally makes its way back into town, you might want to check out some of the local happenings and get your summer started – at last.

Still got World Cup Fever? It’s down to the final four so if you want to check out the action with other football fans, you can head over to one of these pubs. George and the Dragon (Fremont), The Kangaroo and Kiwi Pub (Green Lake), Kell’s (Pike Place Market), Cafe Presse (Cap …

Sex and Babies: Now Playing

Sharon June 6, 2010 1 Comment

Over the past few weeks, I’ve seen two movies that clearly had me pegged as their primary target audience. Well, perhaps I’m more like riding the outer fringes of the newest consumer demographic, which Madison Avenue has dubbed, the “Nestie.”

The Nestie, like the Soccer Mom and Nascar Dad before it, is the new purchasing shzat. They are women in their mid 20s to mid 30s, who are on the cusp or in the throws of planning weddings, buying homes, and having babies. Apparently, this group outspends nearly all their female counterparts, and thus, are now coveted by all parties …

Celebrate Your Mamas!

Sharon May 7, 2010 1 Comment

Wallingford is bustling with mothers – young and old, hip or crunchy, working at home or in the office – all of whom deserve to be celebrated on Mother’s Day (and everyday). Mother’s Day is celebrated all around the world. Here, in the U.S., it’s the second Sunday in May.

In the late 1800’s, there were several attempts to establish the holiday, but momentum didn’t catch on until the efforts of Anna Jarvis. Wanting to honor her deceased mother’s dream of making a celebration for all mothers, she enlisted the assistance of wealthy Philadelphia merchant John Wanamaker and promoted the …

Mutt Mitts!

Sharon April 21, 2010 2 Comments

For those who read my previous “Notes From the Playground” posts, you might remember the story of a toddler’s poop-smeared ride down the slide that got a discussion going about needing a Mutt Mitt dispenser at Wallingford Park. Well, the mitts are in, or at least the dispenser is. You can find it at Northwest corner of the park, at 43rd and Woodlawn.

But perhaps more frequent refills are in need? I’ve checked the dispenser a few times over the past couple of weeks and it’s been empty each time. That said, I’m not a dog owner, so if anyone …
