Sharon came to Seattle sixteen years ago to attend the University of Washington Law School and has been here ever since. House hunting brought her to Wallingford – the tree lined beauty of 40th just couldn’t be beat. Since then, she has practiced law, written some short stories, taken a detour into project management, and started a family. She currently works for a large Redmond software company and has moved to another home in Wallingford with Scott, their two children, and cat. She came to write for Wallyhood through her friend Jordan.

Amores Perros

There was a comment to my last Playground post “Hold it or run,” sent in by a Wallingford Mom that made me laugh and cringe at the same time:

Today at the Wallingford park, a little girl stepped in dog doo, then went down the slide making a dog poo streak all the way down. Before I noticed, my daughter was on the slide and had it all on her hands and clothes! There is nothing more gross…

Generally, I find that Seattle-ites are pretty good about picking up after their dogs. When we’re out on walks in the neighborhood, …

Wallymom

I’ve been writing the series “Notes from the Playground” about Wallingford Playfield, but since it’s winter and our park excursions have reduced considerably, I thought I’d broaden my scope a bit with a new series about parenting called Wallymom.

There are all these sayings about parenthood. How being a parent is the best job in the world, the hardest job, the most rewarding, the most enriching, that it’s a gift, etc. Four years and two kids into this journey, I’m finding that it’s all those things. And more.

It prompts this strange mix of thought from philosophical musings about the …

Hold it or run

Sharon January 25, 2010 4 Comments

After a week of rainy days, we Seattleites got a reprieve this weekend, so our family did what comes natural when the sun comes out: we made a beeline for Wallingford Park.

We hit the park Friday, Saturday and Sunday, pulling one daily double, and we were certainly not alone. Tons of kids were running in, on, and around the play structure, swings were being swung, and the merry go round was on fire. It wasn’t an atypical park scene by any means, but somehow it just made you feel so good. I closed my eyes and let my senses …

Tour de Wallyhood

Sharon January 15, 2010 6 Comments

Being a mom of young kids, living in Wallingford is a gift. There are so many places you can go,  on foot or by bicycle, to amuse the little ones and yourself, as the winter days start to give everyone cabin fever. Just the other day, we made a solid two hour outing of walking around, doing a “tour de wallyhood” if you will. We were gone so long that the baby bjorn straps cut into my shoulders, creating semi-permanent grooves. Perhaps I can try and pass them off as the new alternative to model-thin clavicles. It’s worth a shot, …
