Sharon came to Seattle sixteen years ago to attend the University of Washington Law School and has been here ever since. House hunting brought her to Wallingford – the tree lined beauty of 40th just couldn’t be beat. Since then, she has practiced law, written some short stories, taken a detour into project management, and started a family. She currently works for a large Redmond software company and has moved to another home in Wallingford with Scott, their two children, and cat. She came to write for Wallyhood through her friend Jordan.

Notes from the Playground – Monkey Bars & Slippery Slopes

Sharon December 7, 2009 3 Comments

For those who were interested in “the case of the missing monkey bars” at Wallingford Playfield, Mandy sent in this update from Seattle Parks and Recreation. Plus, a bonus update on the “slippery slope” that we featured earlier in the fall. We’ll try to keep in touch with the Parks Department and provide additional updates as winter turns to spring. Thanks for this info Mandy!

In response to Mandy’s email, Seattle Parks and Recreation says…

The climbing arch was removed because, during a regular playground inspection, Parks staff discovered that the wooden footings were rotten and posed a safety hazard. …

Santa comes to Wallingford

Sharon December 3, 2009 2 Comments

My 4 year old has had a love-hate relationship with Department Store Santas for the past, well, four years. He’s super into the “real” Santa, of course, but only likes to admire the store Santas from afar. He particularly likes how Santa wears white gloves and never fails to mention them. “Oh, Mommy, see Santa? He’s waving just to me…with his white gloves.”

We decided to do our first Santa visit of the season at Wallingford Center, by way of Mud Puddle Club Photography. Wallingford Santa, as my son called him, is one smart cookie, newly situated in kid-row, …

Notes from the Playground – Wannabe Trackster

Sharon December 1, 2009 3 Comments

I went for a run at the park a few weeks ago (before they put up that fence) and paid the price. I hadn’t done a lick of exercise since the new baby. Okay, so she’s not that new anymore, but she hasn’t hit the one year mark yet so I feel like I can still claim her as my exercise exemption. In any case, my pitiful twenty minute run left me hacking some major spittle and gave me a bad head cold. I wasn’t back to my normal self for a week. Maybe the exercise gods were trying to …

The Case of the Missing Monkey Bars

Sharon November 3, 2009 8 Comments

(Sharon’s Notes from the Playground)

I took my daughter to the park today – pretty typical excursion, baby swings, watching other babies, waving at shadows. All fun stuff for a 7 month old. After maybe fifteen minutes or so, we meandered around the big play structure and I was struck by something, or maybe more accurately, a lack of something: there was a big void where the monkey bars used to be.

At first I thought I had just missed them. Or maybe that they had moved somehow? But alas, the monkey bars were definitely gone. Almost stranger than their …

Notes from the Playground – All Hallows’ Eve Edition

Sharon October 29, 2009 2 Comments

(Sharon veers off-topic this week, with a Note Not from the Playground)

Halloween is a strange and fascinating holiday filled with frights, delights and everything that children of all ages seem to love. According to Wikipedia, the celebration has its roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints. Although everyone knows its association with pumpkins, costumes, trick or treating, pranks, and slasher films, there are other interesting elements that conspire to make it utterly unique among the other special days we celebrate, whether religious, secular, or Hallmark-inspired. Plus, it’s my personal favorite.

Notes from the Playground – People you Meet

Sharon October 20, 2009 1 Comment

(Sharon continues her Notes from the Playground series)

When you take your kids to the park, say once, twice, maybe three times a day, you end up meeting lots of people. Well, more like you run into a lot of parents, who are in the same boat as you. Luckily for us, the hood seems to attract very cool “rents.” Folks are really down to earth, into their kids, and the neighborhood. And what’s not to like about the neighborhood? It’s classic Seattle – it’s got older homes with a lot of character, feels urban but homey, and has increasingly …

Notes from the Playground – Fall is Here

Sharon October 5, 2009 Comments are off

(Sharon continues her Notes from the Playground series)

The official start of fall may have been last week but now it feels like the real deal. A little rain here and there, mixed in with crisp blue bird days that feel refreshing yet cozy at the same time. Fall is my favorite season in Seattle. I love going on evening walks, hearing the sound of autumn leaves crunching beneath my feet as I savor a hot cup of coffee and watch the kids run around the park. The days may be shorter both in time and sunshine, but it’s nice …
