Wallyhood is a "group blog" with many contributors. However, whenever you see a post written by "Wallyhood", that's Jordan Schwartz, Wallyhood's founder, Editor-in-Chief, Publisher, community manager, janitor, account executive, and chief enthusiast. Jordan has lived in the same little house in Wallingford since 1993. He arrived from points east with his cat, Fourth, and has since been joined by his wife Michelle, son Zevin, chickens Dominique, Winny and Betty and bees innumerable and unnamed. Days find him working on Pathable, a social networking service for conferences and events.

Shop Hyperlocal for the Holidays

Jordan December 8, 2019 2 Comments

Our neighborhood has some amazing artists and craftspeople. Shop local this season! (And no, Amazon doesn’t count as “local”, even in this city.)

This past Saturday, Mosaic Coffeehouse hosted a dozen or so local artists and craftspeople, selling their work just in time for the holidays. In case you missed it but would like to give something unique, original and truly locally made, I gathered their contact info for you here. Some have online shops, but you might reach out about local perusing and pick-up if you see something you like.

Update: there is another local art and craft market …

Tiny House Village Gets An Extension

Jordan December 7, 2019 4 Comments

The tempestuous story of the Northlake Tiny House Village has taken an unexpected but happy turn.

In October, the Human Services Department (HSD) announced that it would be cutting off funding for the village and closing it as of December 31st (Northlake Tiny House Village To Close). This deadline was then moved back to December 9th (Northlake Tiny House Village Gets A New Deadline), and the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) informed residents that anyone remaining onsite as of this coming Monday, December 9th would be subject to arrest.

Jami Fecher, the pastor of Wallingford’s Gift of Grace Church and …

Last Chance for Seahawks Tickets

Jordan December 6, 2019 1 Comment

Friendly reminder, if you’re interested in a pair of free tickets to the Seahawks vs Cardinals home game on December 22nd, we’ll be drawing a winner this Sunday evening, December 8th from amongst the people who have donated to FamilyWorks Family Resource Center and Food Bank using the form below.

If you’re wondering what your odds are, Joey Ashenbrenner from FamilyWorks tells me that you still have a better chance of winning this than of being called down as a contestant on The Price Is Right (assuming you’re in the audience.)

The Wallingford Community Council will be holding its monthly meeting tonight, Wednesday Dec 4th, at 7 pm in Room 202 of the Good Shepherd Center, 4659 Sunnyside Ave N. City of Seattle presentation and Q&A with Nancy Stachey, Manager of Property Management, and Mike Ashbrook, Division Director of the Department of Finance and Administrative Services. Perche No, non più!

Jordan December 1, 2019 2 Comments

The Italian restaurant Perché No (1319 N 49th St) will end a twenty-two year run, thirteen of them in Wallingford / Green Lake, on December 18th. They recently posted the story to their Facebook page:

On Wednesday, December 18, 2019, Lily and Chef David Kong will officially retire, closing their Italian restaurant Perché No (Why not?) after 27 years.

Perché No opened on October 30, 1992, in Uptown (lower Queen Anne) where they stayed for 14 years. Their customers ranged from opera, ballet, and symphony lovers along with Sonics fans and local neighbors. In 1998, they purchased a limo that …

FamilyWorks’ 2019 Family Holiday Program

Jordan November 28, 2019 Comments are off

Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you’re safe, warm, well-fed and spending time with friends or family.

FamilyWorks is running another Family Holiday Program this year, collecting gifts for families in need.

Kirby Lochner from FamilyWorks writes that they’re doing it a little bit differently this year. Instead of focusing on stuff, they’re asking people to donate experiences, which sounds just about right to me.

The program will run slightly different than last year, as we are no longer matching donors with participant wishlists. Instead, we heard from many of our participants that the holiday season is especially important to them …

Three Businesses to Be

Jordan November 25, 2019 1 Comment

Windows around Wallingford promise change.

The “What Will Replace Wallyburger” mystery has been solved:

Turnover will also be coming quickly to Damsel & Hopper’s old spot on Wallingford Ave, in the property owned by Julia’s:

The sign indicates that Juisala will be opening “Mid December”, and Internet sleuthing (OK, typing “juisala” into Google and reading the first page of results) indicates that they’ll be selling smoothies, salads and acai bowls. Their website is still under construction, but breaks bold new territory with a tongue twisting neologism:

We are an ORGANICTARIAN Food and Beverage Company that’s committed to Clean and Organic …
