Wallyhood is a "group blog" with many contributors. However, whenever you see a post written by "Wallyhood", that's Jordan Schwartz, Wallyhood's founder, Editor-in-Chief, Publisher, community manager, janitor, account executive, and chief enthusiast. Jordan has lived in the same little house in Wallingford since 1993. He arrived from points east with his cat, Fourth, and has since been joined by his wife Michelle, son Zevin, chickens Dominique, Winny and Betty and bees innumerable and unnamed. Days find him working on Pathable, a social networking service for conferences and events.

What’s that apple?

Jordan September 23, 2019 3 Comments

Local dendrophile Burb Burrill writes:

My friend Lori Brakken will be at Meridian Playground [4649 Sunnyside Ave N, technically] on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 4 – 7 pm, to tell you what kind of fruit you have. Lori is THE expert in apple ID in the greater Seattle area. I’ll be there with Lori to answer your fruit tree care questions.

We’ll have a canopy and table set up in the park on the north side of the hedge, separate from the Wallingford Farmers Market.

If you want your fruit identified, it’s best to bring samples of the actual fruit.…

Catnapper Update

Jordan September 21, 2019 3 Comments

Faith in humanity restored. Following up on our Catnapper story, it turns out that, despite the visual evidence to the contrary, it always pays to leave an open mind until you have all the evidence. Frederic writes:

Epilogue: The person who picked up Toulouse thought it could belong to a friend of her whose cat is also missing and looks very much like Toulouse. In doubt, her friend Steve eventually brought Toulouse to the Cat Clinic of Seattle on Stone Way where his microchip could be read.

Thank you very much to all of you who have taken the time …

Toulouse, missing cat

UPDATE: Toulouse has been returned.

Cats, especially the indoor-outdoor cat popular in Wallingford, disappear sometimes. Cars, coyotes and other calamities each take their toll. It’s also the case that Wallingford has more than its fair share of porch pirates, pinching packages fresh from Amazon’s delivery service.

But pinching a cat is just beyond the pale. And yet, Frederic posted these photos taken by security camera from this past Friday the 13th of someone doing exactly that to his dear cat Toulouse, along with this explanation.

MISSING CAT: Apparently “Toulouse” was picked up on Friday 13th at 4:30pm in front of …

Eating News

Jordan September 18, 2019 Comments are off

Two small eats notes:

Work is underway at the old Wallyburger on 45th St. When Wallyburger closed back in June, they posted to their Instagram feed that there would another venture in the same space this Fall. Fall is just about upon us, and wandering by the other night, I snapped this photo of the transformation underway inside.

Further east, there’s a new (to us) food truck on 45th. Parked in the lot of Northwest Best Auto Repair (2221 N 45th St), just across from Kabul, the Thai 65 Express is operated by the same owners as the old Thai …

The Grass Harp and Other Lonely Books

Jordan September 16, 2019 3 Comments

It’s been about nine months since we added our own Little Free Library to the mosquito fleet of literary largesse that speckles the neighborhood. I was particularly proud of the solar-powered lighting system that would make late-night book browsing an option for the cultured dog-walker out for an evening perambulatory peruse, and also of the little surrealist diorama I nestled amongst the books (pictured at right.)

Part of the fun has been curating the collection: we have boxes of books we’ve enjoyed over the years that we trickle out onto the shelves, but we also make sure that there’s room …
