Farmer’s Market

We didn't get our usual e-mail from the organizers letting us know what will be fresh at today's Wallingford Farmer's Market (3 - 7 pm, Wallingford Center), but a bit of sleuthing told us that the cooking demonstration at 4 pm will by Chef Alex Pitts of Bella Cosa. We've had the pleasure of chatting food with Alex a number of times on visits to Bella Cosa, and what we say now is true: that man loves food. Passionately. We don't…

Wallingford Plum Soup

We couldn't stand it. Every day, we'd be out, strolling around the neighborhood, and there they were: two trees full of the brightest golden plums you've ever seen.  They ripened and ripened and eventually began to fall, big fat raindrop splashes of juicy plums, wasted windfall. We admit it: we wanted them! So this past Saturday, we got up our gumption and knocked on the door. Nobody was home, but we did notice a package waiting for pick-up, addressed to a…

Harvest Your Fruit

We need to keep this short, because our fingers are still sticky with purloined plum juice. While there's been lots of conversation in the comments section of our Fruit Robbers post on whether that's kosher, regardless, there's lots of fruit coming ripe in Wallingford, and, if you've got a tree with more fruit than you can handle, please don't let it go to waste. Lettuce Link is a project of Solid Ground that will harvest your fruit and distribute it to…

Bella Cosa Unbound

We fogged the glass of the shuttered Bella Cosa this evening long enough to wave over Alex and Jared, who pushed aside enough debris to allow us to get a stroller (and a curious stroller pusher) through the door. The good news is that the remodel is fully underway. They've knocked down walls, torn out fixtures, exposed ceilings and wiring and are fully on their way to a fully featured restaurant. The floorplan calls for a kitchen open to the dining…

Fruit Robbers

Returning from our vacation this past weekend, we discovered the tomatoes to the right in our garden, clearly victims of the same burglar that spied on us in our hot tub and plucked cherries from our neighbor's tree: raccoons. These particular bandits aside, it brings to mind a thorny question: as any Wallingford stroller knows, we are thick with sidewalk fruit trees. What's the etiquette of partaking? If someone's plum tree is planted in their devil strip, and those luscious fruit…

Golden Olive

Continuing Stories from the Community week, we share this rave review of the Golden Olive (1712 N 45th St) sent in by Rory: It was hot!! Too hot to cook. So out to dinner. The Goddess of parking gave us a parking spot in front of the Golden Olive restaurant. I thank her. We had intended to go to another restaurant within easy walking distance. My wife mentioned that she had thought to try the Golden Olive as well. We of…

Brzozwy

In addition to Wallingford Art Walk, today is Wallingford Farmer's Market (3 - 7 pm, Wallingford Center). We thought we'd share our favorite morning recipe with you, just in time for you to pick up the ingredients. There's no better way to start a day than a good, rich smoothie. Everyone has their own recipe. This is ours: The key to this smoothie is that it's got something a bit different every time you make it, so you never get bored…
