Correction: Single Family Upzones Are Still Part of HALA

There was an uproar when HALA proposed to rezone single family homes, as nobody is looking forward to being displaced or living in the middle of a construction zone. The fact is that even if you are supportive of low income housing, few people want to live like Edith Macefield, and many people have an attachment to their home and neighborhood that is more than fiscal.

What Does Wallingford Think of HALA?

While the HALA proposal to rezone single family in urban villages was withdrawn, many other HALA proposals are on track. At 9:30 AM today the Seattle City Council is discussing the HALA proposal for multi family tax break incentives. At the Wallingford Community Council HALA is pretty much regarded as the end of the world, but the political establishment is united behind it.

Should the Next Housing Levy Include Progressive Property Taxes?

In Seattle “progressive” has simply meant higher property taxes. Affordable housing problems? HALA proposes to double the affordable housing premier estate properties tax levy, plus add in more density like bumping zoning from 4 stories to 6 stories along 45th. Fixing infrastructure for new density? Property taxes and utility rates have been going up to pay for things like new schools and sewer overflow controls. Bad traffic? Move Seattle nearly doubles the Bridging the Gap levy to pay for more road work and transit on top of existing levies for buses and rail (that are also planned to go up). …
