Family Night Dinner at Avila

When Avila (1711 N. 45th Street) announced their opening, they mentioned they were interested in serving a one-day a week family friendly meal: dirt-cheap, kid-friendly homestyle cooking. Wasting no time, they're kicking it off this Sunday, November 22nd from 5:30 - 8:30 pm. The menu will change each week (and there will always be a vegetarian option), but they're starting off with: Bread and Green Salad Fried Chicken or Kale Stuffed Cannelloni Mashed Potatoes and Roasted Zucchini Pineapple Upside-Down Cake $10…

Petitions, Surveys, and Meetings, Oh My!

If you've been following reader comments underneath the call for signing petitions, surveys or meeting announcements, you can see how much Seattle Public School's new Student Assignment Plan has already impacted our neighborhood.  But many would agree that the question of sibling "grandfathering"--allowing younger siblings of children currently enrolled in school to attend the same school despite the changes in boundaries-- is the one issue that seems to be the most important.  This is true not only for Wallingford, but for…

Greetings from a New Wallywriter

Hello, neighbors!  I thought I'd introduce myself to you as a new Wallywriter, mostly covering our neighborhood schools, though there might be a few other little tidbits I'll cover now and then. Three years ago, when we began the kindergarten enrollment process for our son, my husband and I knew next to nothing about any of the schools in our neighborhood, despite having lived here for 10 years.  As we settled into our school’s community, one of my volunteer efforts was…

So shoppers can go home feeling great about themselves and practically finished with their holiday shopping at the same time :) Thanks to everyone for helping CoolMom fill the donation barrels. It's going to be a great…

School Petition

If you've got kids, you're probably too exhausted at this point in the night to be reading this blog. But maybe you'll be up at 4 a.m. like we are with Baby Z, and you'll see it then. Either way, that would give you enough time to sign this petition that some Wallingford parents have put together asking for a change to the new school boundaries. The deadline for submitting the petition is apparently tomorrow, Friday, as they would like to…

Kimberly, a member of the CoolMoms, a group of women working to raise awareness around climate issues, sent this call-out for donations for their second annual Swap n' Shop Toy Sale, a fundraiser they're holding for their group and for FamilyWorks: I'm a CoolMom (belonging to the Greenwood/Ballard group because currently there isn't a Wallingford group), and I'm helping organize a fundraiser to benefit CoolMom.org and FamilyWorks. Here's the skinny: We are really short on used-toy donations, and without them our…

New School Boundaries Released

(The story below originally appeared in the My Green Lake blog.) Seattle Public Schools has revised the proposed attendance boundaries, which are a key component of the new student assignment plan.   The Seattle Times is reporting that the district made changes in the boundaries for 45 of its 58 elementary schools. The changes reflect many of the more than 1,000 suggestions made by parents and other community members, said Tracy Libros, director of enrollment planning. The School Board is scheduled to…
