Jean Godden Improves Move Seattle for Wallingford

Eric July 6, 2015 11 Comments

Remember the walking tour to fix the Move Seattle Levy? Well, it had an effect- Jean Godden added this requirement to the final Move Seattle Levy language:

Develop plans and complete improvements to enhance the NE 45th St Corridor for pedestrians and cyclists between 4th Ave NE and Brooklyn Ave NE by the time University Light Rail opens in 2021.

We went back and forth with her a few times on the language, as the initial amendment just asked for a study. Even the language above may be maneuvered around- it’s possible that SDOT will do something really lame like …

District 6 Wonkathon: Cycle Tracks on Green Lake Way N

Eric June 9, 2015 10 Comments

The Question: The Move Seattle Levy includes adding cycle tracks on N 50th and Green Lake Way N. Those cycle tracks are in the Move Levy according to SDOT director Scott Kubly because we are paving those roads, and the bike master plan has cycle tracks on those roads. Unfortunately, those cycle tracks are already obsolete, having been designed to connect to a planned cycle track on Stone Way N that was removed from the Bike Master Plan at the last minute due to neighborhood push back. As is, the cycle tracks on Green Lake Way N and N 50th…

District 4 Wonkathon: Fixing the Move Seattle Levy

Eric May 22, 2015 Comments are off

If you read the blog then I’m sure you saw this candidate question coming. Also, to keep the train rolling on these questions I’m skipping a separate calendar post this week, check out our calendar page for what’s going on in Wallingford over the next week.

The Question: 45th street over I-5 is one of the most congested, dangerous roadways in the city for pedestrians and cyclists, yet the Move Seattle Levy does nothing to help connect Wallingford pedestrians or cyclists to light rail in the U-District. This is the top ask by Seattle Greenways for district 4 and …

Move Seattle: Wallingford Shows the Council They Care

Eric May 18, 2015 13 Comments

We had a GREAT turnout for the Move Seattle levy “fix-it” tour on Sunday! About 50 participants showed up as we toured paths from Wallingford to the U-District, mostly people from Wallingford. Seattle City Council Transportation Committee representatives Jean Godden, Mike O’Brien, and Tom Rasmussen all attended, and news stations were there as well. For a wonky tour of neighborhood greenways and an I-5 bridge crossing that’s a great turnout!

While we were on the walk all three council members spoke in favor of improving Wallingford’s connection to the U-District, along with several community members. Tom Rasmussen, chair of the …

Seattle City Council Comes to Wallingford on Sunday

Eric May 15, 2015 10 Comments

Seattle City Council Transportation Committee representatives Tom Rasmussen and Jean Godden will be taking part in the Move Seattle levy walking tour happening this Sunday at 11 AM in Wallingford and the U-District. Mike O’Brien is also on the Transportation Committee and is a maybe (it’s his wife’s birthday), plus candidates running against Jean Godden for Seattle City Council District 4 will be attending.

Wallyhood hopes you will come on the walk! Just come to the Mosaic Coffee house on 44th between 1st and 2nd Ave NE by 11 AM Sunday. Here is a printable map of the walk. Our …

Move Levy Isn’t Fixed, but SDOT Will Visit Wallingford

Eric May 8, 2015 13 Comments

The mayor’s final Move Levy proposal was released, but unfortunately nothing has improved for Wallingford despite the levy growing from 900 million to 930 million. Here is the map, then the proposals:

On the map grey is paving, yellow is safety improvements to Aurora, blue is bike master plan implementation, and the red targets are seismic upgrades. I added the numbers and aligned them with the numbered project list below. Descriptions are from SDOT via their project list plus what you come up with when matching the blue lines to to the Bike Master plan:

Green Lake Way N paving…

Move Levy Investments Don’t Fit Safety Data

Eric May 1, 2015 7 Comments

Wallyhood requested safety data for Green Lake Way N and N 50th because the Move Levy targets those streets for a cycle track. We also requested safety data for 45th street because SDOT is not investing in connecting Wallingford to the U-District. Here’s the safety data from Brian Dougherty at SDOT (thanks Brian!):

As you can see, Green Lake Way and N 50th pose very little danger to people on bikes or pedestrians. I know this first hand as I bike those roads daily. It’s hard to justify the expense of cycle tracks here plus the complications that will come …
