Pipes and Drums

Scotty writes: I am with the Seattle Police Pipes and Drums.  We are having a social this Saturday at Murphy's Pub from 6pm to 9pm.  The Seattle Police Pipes and Drums is an all volunteer group made up of Seattle Police Officers. While most know us for playing at funerals for the brave men and women who have given the ultimate, we are also dedicated to strengthening and maintaining a positive relationship with the citizens of Seattle.  In the past we have had our socials…

Yellow Strip

Stacy spotted this lovely bit of insanity on the SPD Blotter: Seattle police are on the trail of a passive-aggressive parking vigilante, who’s been graffitiing all over the street and leaving nasty notes for neighbors in North Seattle. Earlier this year, some neighborhood parking vigilante took it upon themselves to paint (unofficial) parking lines along most of a one-block stretch of Whitman Avenue N near 41st Street. Last week, the woman left her car parked outside those unofficial lines for several days…

Winchell Wiper

The Winchell's building, which has been serving as storage area for the Rancho Bravo taco truck and its sister site, Pinky's BBQ across the street, has been something of a visual blight since the donut shop closed in late 2009. The windows still show the peeling, sun-faded donut advertisements, and the interior is cluttered with a haphazard collection of taco and bbq miscellany. Hardly what we would hope for as a "Gateway to Wallingford", welcoming the flow from the east. Hope…

Backyard Mushrooms and More Urban Orchard Fun

Ruth from the Freeway Estates Community Orchard (FECO) let us know that fungi fun will be mushrooming at FECO this weekend when mushroom coaches help future backyard mycologists (that's you!) learn about the art of mushroom growing. Sound Transit recently removed two beautiful Scarlet Oak trees near Roosevelt High School in order to make way for light rail. Rather than let that wood go to waste (and since oak is perfect for growing several different varieties of edible mushrooms), FECO teamed up with Roosevelt…

Wallingford CVS Project Takes A Tumble

The CVS project proposed for 45th and Meridian took an unusual turn at the Design Review Board meeting on the 4th of November. An update was presented to the Wallingford Community Council at its meeting last week. Here is what we know at this time: The original design for the project presented by CVS to the Design Review Board called for the destruction of the building which includes the Moon Temple and the closed Tully’s Coffee store. CVS proposed to replace…
