Fireworks Mayhem

From what we've been hearing, this Fourth of July did not go so smooth. Here's a smattering of the comments left on an early post here on Wallyhood: Walking home from the park last night, corner of 40th and Stone Way: Some idiot set up flash bombs IN THE STREET, in th path of the southbound traffic. He plugged a bunch of powder in when the Southbound traffic was stopped, then lit the fuses the second they turned green. About 15…

National Night Out

I heard Lawrence Lessig speak at a Web 2.0 conference some years back, and he made a point that resonated with me: if you've got a family with alcoholic, abusive, unemployed parent, it's not really going to help to try to address the abuse or the unemployment alone: as long the alcoholism is there, all the other problems will remain. And the same goes for the corruption that political donations have on our electoral system: until you solve the way money…

Planning for the Fourth

Wednesday is the busiest day of the year for Wallingford, the Fourth of July. If you're wondering about specific details (what time the fireworks start, can you bring beer into Gas Works, what station carries the simulcast, etc.) head on over to Family4th.org and read up. One interesting note is that this year there are activities all around the lake, including a stage with music at the south end of the lake in Lake Union Park and the MOHAI Cheshiahud Challenge, a…

Pack Your Tote Bags!

If today's your day to restock the fridge, remember to bring your reusable bags when you head out to shop. As of today, single-use plastic bags are no longer permitted at retail stores such as grocery and drug stores. This follows an ordinance passed by the Seattle City Council in December, which bans the use of thin plastic bags. To help people with limited incomes prepare for the ban, CoolMom recently hosted a tote bag drive for Wallingford's FamilyWorks Food Bank. Thanks…

Host Family Sought for Thai Student

Woodland Park Zoo has a little slice of Thailand in their elephant habitat, complete with a village area, a model of a temple and elephants, of course. 45th Street boasts several fine Thai restaurants that can leave you with a longing to travel. But if a trip overseas isn't in your immediate future, you can still immerse yourself in Thai culture by hosting a foreign exchange student. Wallyhood reader Janell writes that the International Student Exchange (ISE) is seeking a host family…
