50th St Market Re-Opening Saturday

The 50th Street Market saga looks like it's rolling towards a happy conclusion. Back in March, we reported that this old neighborhood fixture had closed. Then, in July, we found out that it had found a new owner and would re-open. Now, Kelley reports that the re-opening is upon us: Per a chat with the proprieter the other day, it's official: the 50th St. Market (50th & 1st) will reopen this Saturday, 15 Aug. Grocery, deli, and "a few gifts". Welcome…

Bedrooms and More

Jeff Garfield from Bedrooms and More (300 NE 45th St) dropped us a line recently with a bit of history on his shop. It's nicely written and helps paint a picture of how the neighborhood has developed, so we thought we'd share what he wrote with you: I moved to Wallingford in 1969 while going to the University and opened a business in 1972 on 45th. The stretch between Dick's Drive In and "The Burg" was the place to cruise when…

PARK(ing) Day

We'd like to draw your attention to a recent post in the the Wallyhood Forums. Elaine writes: I live in Wallingford and am volunteering for an organisation called Feet First. Currently I am working on an event called PARKing Day which is all about taking a car parking spot and turning it into a mini park for the day for people to enjoy. The concept is about getting people to think about the use of urban space and the dominance of…

Fruit Robbers

Returning from our vacation this past weekend, we discovered the tomatoes to the right in our garden, clearly victims of the same burglar that spied on us in our hot tub and plucked cherries from our neighbor's tree: raccoons. These particular bandits aside, it brings to mind a thorny question: as any Wallingford stroller knows, we are thick with sidewalk fruit trees. What's the etiquette of partaking? If someone's plum tree is planted in their devil strip, and those luscious fruit…

Grocery Bag Tax

By now, you should have received your mail-in election ballot. We haven't made up our mind yet who to vote for in most of the races, including mayor (although we're leaning towards Mike McGinn, but that's mostly because he seems to be the most "bike friendly" of the lot, and that's a thin reason to cast a ballot). We do, however, have a strong opinion on the Ref 1, the Grocery Bag Tax. We're for it. We would think we're preaching…

Welcome Cooper Jacobs, new sponsor

It sometimes seems like the folks in Wallingford regard real estate like others regard baseball: whether or not you play, it's fun to keep an eye on the deals, the stats and the intrigue. Given that, it's appropriate that we're able to welcome a real estate broker, Cooper Jacobs, as our newest sponsor. Courtney Cooper has been in real estate for going on 10 years: the first 7 with Windermere before she decided to open her own company (along with her…

Mi Piace, RIP

Rock reminded us that Mi Piace, the little coffeestand that has been serving lattes to humans and biscuits to dogs from the parking lot of QFC for over 20 years, closed up shop for good this past Sunday. The owner, Teresa Dean, will be headed inside to the remodeled QFC's coffee shop when it opens. The Mi Piace building, including espresso machine and grinder, is for sale for $2,000. Fond memories included.
