Easter at Artist & Craftsman Supply

On the border of the Wallingford-University District neutral zone, on the east side of I-5, there is a venerable old retail artist supply store called Artist & Craftsman Supply (4350 8th Avenue NE). It has outlasted everything else that has been housed in the small and now forlorn retail complex across from the Blue Moon Tavern, including the old Mac Store and the giant and now-defunct Petco. Artist & Craftsman Supply remains the go-to location for just about everything related to…

It’s a Girl…Troll! Wallingford to Welcome Fremont Troll’s Little Sister

Big news from just across the Ship Canal: the Fremont Troll is getting a sibling. In an announcement that took many by surprise, the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture revealed preliminary plans for a new sister Troll sculpture, this one to be installed not in Fremont, but right here in Wallingford, essentially making us the Troll’s official next‑door family. According to the City, the project is part of a broader effort to “expand the regional troll narrative,” ensuring that Fremont’s…

Local Artist Melinda Hannah and Aditi Yoga|Wellness Studio Sponsor a Celebration at the Wallingford Center

February is a short month, so I believe we can justify stretching the season of love and appreciation beyond the 14th of February and share a Valentine message. Wallingford is fortunate to have a talented artist, Melinda Hannah, who loves to memorialize the heritage homes found in our neighborhood and across the city. “It’s all about the legacy of this great community,” she says. You may have met Melinda at the Wallingford Farmer’s Market (Wallyhood did a feature on her artwork…

Valentine’s Day Starts Early on Corliss

A couple of years ago, we reported on the mysterious case of Valentine’s Day hearts set out along the planting strip of Bagley Avenue N. I didn’t see any last year, although perhaps I missed them. But this year, the mysterious somebody is back! When I walked up Corliss Avenue N (between N 40th and N 43rd Streets) on February 11, hearts aplenty adorned the planting strip. And there were some along Bagley, too. How long they will remain is unknown.…

The Daphnes perform at the Chapel at Good Shepherd Center

https://soundcloud.com/harppoet/mood-indigo-sonarchy-session In 2016 I felt pretty depressed about the state of the world. One day I picked up an old New Yorker from years back. In it was a fantastic article that I had never read by David Remnick about Aretha Franklin. It occurred to me that the same country that produced our horrifying racial past (and present) also produced the most amazing artist ever. I started listening to Aretha constantly. One day I turned to my neighbor and musician Monica…

Saltstone Ceramics opens Sept 1

Sarah Steininger Leroux believes that a creative practice is an important part of a holistic life, no different than exercise or a spiritual practice. “It’s a part of our psyche to want to produce,” she says, “it makes people feel fulfilled.” And yet, Steininger has found that many people are intimidated by creative experiences. She also feels that in urban tech centers like Seattle, people are often working on intangible projects that make it difficult to walk away and say “I…
