Legend of the Rancho Tamale

There's a saying, "The longer the wait, the sweeter the kiss," and it applies to so many things: a cold beer at the end of a long hike, a first victory after a string of defeats and, of course, tamales. Tamales? Yes, tamales, but not just any tamales. Rancho Bravo tamales. It all began (as so many adventures do) with an off-hand comment from Hoyt: "Have you tried the Rancho Bravo tamales?" As long-time Wallingford residents, we're as aware as any…

Perche No’s re-opening

We got more info no Perche No's re-opening this Friday, right from the Kong's themselves: Our family is pleased to welcome you back to your “home away from home” as PERCHE’NO Pasta & Vino reopens on Friday, May 15th. We think you will be surprised at some of the additions that we have made as we rebuild. They include an entertainment balcony that floats above our open kitchen and bar, a waiting area with a new front desk and a display…

Wallingford Garage Sale Day

This past Saturday, we hopped on our beaten old Trek bike and peddled the 10 or so miles over to West Seattle, for West Seattle Garage Sale Day. We didn't buy anything (except a half-dozen delicious, backyard chicken eggs), but considered it a day very well spent. See, we just love garage sales (or "tag sales", as we called 'em Back East), which is why it galls us that Phinney / Greenwood has their Community Garage Sale Day, West Seattle has…

Kidical Mass Clarification

Once again, our jesting has gotten out of hand. We lightly implied that this Friday's Kidical Mass bike ride, organized by Totycle, had some relation to Critical Mass, the "take back the streets" bicycle ride. Some folks got riled. It is not. The only thing they have in common is that they are bicycle rides intended to help bicycle riders feel more comfortable riding in the city...and they both end in "-ical Mass". Look, here's the visual we want you to…

Boys and Girls Club

Wallyhood has given its fair of love to Interconnection (refurbishing computers for low income communities around the world) and to FamilyWorks (providing food bank and family servies to those in need), but we've given short-shrift to another great service organization right in midst: the Wallingford Boys and Girls Club. We had seen the building there for decades, but knew vaguely that it was not operating as the Boys and Girls Club until more recently. Turns out they had moved out in…

Fainting Goat Open

In response to our Fainting Goat photos, Natalie wrote: My family and I walked by this place around noon. We peaked in the window and saw gelato in the display case. The door was unlocked, so my husband peaked in to ask if they were open and the man behind the counter said they would be opening this afternoon. We intended to go back this evening, but never made it. Anyone have a review they would like to share? Early word…

More Trouble on Latona

More trouble at 4338 Latona. Back in April, regular readers (and neighbors) may remember there were reports of gunfire (which the residents denied) followed by an outdoor scuffle during a large party (Incident on Latona). Several neighbors have reported that the scene was repeated this past Friday night, with witnesses describing a car speeding away from the melee, gun out the window, shots firing in the air. Apparently, these two incidents, amazing and out-of-place in Wallingford as they are, are actually…
