BeelinerJitterLokiCafe Gossip

The old Loki Cafe spot (2114 N 45th Street) has been empty since August, and guessing what's going to replace it has become something of a parlor game in Wallingford: a new Thai restaurant? Lunchbox Laboratory? Condos? In the hopes of getting some answers, we contacted Kate Perry, the Marketing Coordinator for Chow Foods (who operate The 5 Spot, The High Life, Coastal Kitchen, Atlas and others, and who we understand hold the lease). She replied: Thanks for getting in touch.…

Earth Day in Wallingford

We managed to peel ourselves off from work today long enough to stroll the Earth Day celebration in Wallingford. There was a marimba band playing music (from Hamilton Middle School), chalk, folks in costumes, kids, laughter, free cookies, and all sortsa Earth Day happitude. Congrats to Sustainable Wallingford for organizing! Is that Flat Stanley on the right?

Rosemary and Shrooms

No, no, nothing like that. This is a family blog. Just a couple of garden notes from around the 'hood. First, our friend Matt over on Ashworth tells us he started trying to cultivate morel mushrooms at home, carefully laying the spores on a bed of manure, ash and other select medium. It's not an easy undertaking, as evidenced by the fact that morel mushrooms have never been successfully farmed on a large scale. Virtually all the morels you eat are…

Car Prowl / Police Update

(The state of crime in Wallingford, and the police's reaction to it, is serious enough that I'm going to set aside the normal "Wallyhood We" conceit of this blog, and write this one in the first person singular. The playful, snarky tone doesn't seem appropriate.) I was so shocked by Kristi's comment to the Block Watch? post that I felt I needed to talk with the police about it before responding. It read, in part: I was one of the recent…

News from the Dump

The next meeting of the North Recycling and Disposal Station Stakeholder Group is tomorrow, Tuesday, April 21 from 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm at the Hamilton Middle School (4400 Interlake). For those joining us late, the city is proposing a major remodel of the transfer station (aka "dump"), including expanding to N. Carr Street and the adjoining block, as well as building a larger, enclosed facility in the place of the semi-open air facility now there today. Some neighbors have objected…
