On my way up to try and figure out what’s going on up at the Guild complex, which has been one of my routine and regular obsessions, I did note that there are a LOT of bumblebees working the many lovely gardens and ad hoc flower beds in the neighborhood. However, I also noted that I didn’t see any honeybees. Do we have any entomologists or beekeepers who can offer some insights into the state of bees in the region?

No such qualifications here, but I am pretty sure any honeybees you may see around here are living in someone’s well maintained back yard hive. I guess they may be capable of surviving on their own, but it isn’t their native habitat.

Bumblebees however do quite well here, especially if there’s suitable nest habitat. They nest in the ground, but I think they don’t really like to excavate a lot of mineral dirt, and prefer a spot with some leaf litter and so forth. I also see some kinds of black bees, of various sizes, some of which must be “mason” bees, and little bees that look kind of like a half size honey bee, and iridescent green bees. I imagine that if your interest in bees has persisted since you posed that question, you’ve seen these bees and more in the interim.
