The Seattle Public Library is thrilled to announce that starting Saturday, Feb. 1, the Wallingford Branch will be open six days a week!  This expansion is part of the library’s effort to increase access at nine locations citywide, adding a total of 78 more open hours weekly.

“With this expansion, our patrons can visit our Library spaces more days a week to use the services that are most important to them, from browsing and checking out materials to attending our many wonderful programs,” said Chief Librarian Tom …

John Stanford International Elementary Open House Tour

Schools are truly the heart of any neighborhood, and in Wallingford, we’re lucky to have some wonderful options. When my family was deciding where to put down roots, finding the right schools quickly became a priority. At the time, we were told to look at the high school rankings first and assume the elementary and middle schools feeding into it would be solid. Others suggested focusing on elementary schools, given how much can change in the years between now and high school.

Our family is zoned for Green Lake Elementary (which sounds like a great school), but we chose to …

January and new beginnings

Ellen Robinson January 26, 2025 1 Comment

The month of January is named in honor of the Roman god Janus, who is symbolic of beginnings and transitions. For many of us, January is a time of optimism, filled with resolutions and plans for the New Year.  Gardeners are optimists by nature and we commonly shrug off our failed harvests with a “Well, there’s always next year”.

Winter is a time of rest in the garden as our dark, cold, rainy weather does not support new plantings and the crops we have overwintered are few and far between. In her book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, Barbara Kingsolver called February …

Meridian Playground Play Area Improvements: Project Update

lbush January 23, 2025 Comments are off

In April 2024, Seattle Parks & Recreation began a public engagement process for renovating the play area at Meridian Playground.  This project aims to make site improvements to the play area located within the western half of the former Home of Good Shepherd property. Most components of the play area were constructed in the early 1980s, and revised in 2002, and some equipment was replaced through a Neighborhood Matching Fund project in 2011. Several elements/features within the play area such as existing play equipment, art paving, play area ramps, custom-made v  slides, and rubber tiles need to be renovated or…

A Neighborhood Rare Gem of a Restaurant: Harvest Beat

Gary Shigenaka January 20, 2025 Comments are off

One of the endearing and enduring features of Wallingford is that it is full of little jewels, unique establishments that are often overshadowed and overlooked because of the oversized influence of other places and events. But nestled right in the heart of the neighborhood, on 45th, is a restaurant called Harvest Beat that is quite wonderful. Those of you who peruse Facebook, the newly ungoverned purveyor of discord and distress, might have occasionally seen offers from Harvest Beat in the Wallingford & Fremont group for friends and family discounts for their 5-course prix fixe (fixed price) vegan dinners. …

Chipotle to Open at Former Taco Time Site on 45th

Janet January 18, 2025 4 Comments

After 50 years serving the PNW twist on Mexican food, Taco Time on 45th and Corliss closed in July. According to an article published in The Seattle Times, business slowed significantly during the pandemic, and increases in the cost of labor and food caused them to close this location. The funky mirrored glass building, built in 1990, was soon covered with graffiti and its parking lot was littered with trash.

Taco Time had a special place in the hearts of locals, according to Eater Seattle, with Seattleites feeling sentimental about the Taco Time menu and the quirky building. This played …

Summary of Wallyhood Community Meeting, 8 January

Gary Shigenaka January 16, 2025 2 Comments

On January 8th, the editorial staff at Wallyhood held one of our irregular gatherings with writers, potential writers and editors, and any other curious or interested community members. The Blue Star Café graciously hosted us in their back room and kept us fueled with IPA and appetizers. The purpose of the meeting was, as usual, to recruit and engage. We successfully lured in around ten friends and neighbors to sit with the four of us editors for around an hour and a half. We reviewed the past year, discussed opportunities to get involved with the blog, and then chewed the…
