Northlake Tiny House Village To Close

Jordan October 29, 2019 30 Comments

After a turbulent and acrimonious two years on the Seattle City Light-owned lot off NE Northlake Way, just north of Ivar’s, the Northlake Tiny House Village will be emptied and de-commissioned as of December 31.

In a letter addressed to Sharon Lee, the executive director of the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI, the city-recognized managers of the village), and delivered to the village and the Northlake Community Advisory Council (on which I serve), Adrienne Easter, Manager of Homeless Investments for the City of Seattle Human Services Department (HSD), wrote that the “The City of Seattle will not be renewing the …

Trick or Treat at Wallingford Center

Jordan October 29, 2019 Comments are off

If you want to get a jump on the trick or treating this Thursday, if you want to start fattening your pumpkin before the de facto ringing of the starting bell for trick or treating at about 5:30 pm, you could head on over to the Wallingford Center, where the businesses will be welcoming the young costumed ones:

Grab your little goblins and ghouls and head to Wallingford Center for a fun-filled evening of trick-or-treating. Visit all 12 of the center businesses for a trick or treat. Take your photo with one of our custom back drops! October 31st from …

Skip the Child Labor for Halloween

Jordan October 26, 2019 7 Comments

Thursday is Halloween, and in most parts of Wallingford, that means hoards of trick-or-treaters sweeping up and down your steps to collect their goodies. Time to stock up!

If you haven’t already bought your goodies, I’d like to delicately suggest this article on Cocoa’s child laborers to you. If you can’t make it past the Washington Post’s paywall, I’ll summarize: despite pledges made almost two decades ago, Mars, Nestlé and Hershey still buy the cocoa for their chocolate from farms that use child labor.

One reason is that nearly 20 years after pledging to eradicate child labor, chocolate companies still …

Last Loaf at Damsel & Hopper

Jordan October 23, 2019 1 Comment

I know I’m late to the party, but Damsel and Hopper, the bakery that opened in the heart of Wallingford two years ago September has closed as of last week.

I stopped in a couple days before the closing and chatted with the owner, Rob Salvino, and offered to write a post before it closed, so people could come in and get their last loaf, but he gently waved me off, gesturing to the almost empty shelves and the steady stream of people already coming through to clean him out. “Please don’t, we already don’t have enough.”

I asked him …

A Call for Artists

Katy October 20, 2019 Comments are off

It’s not too early to start planning for the holidays, particularly if you are a crafter and need to make all those local, handcrafted gifts that everyone appreciates. To that effect, Wallyhood reader Elli Stricklin wrote to let us know that together with the group Wallingford Arts and Crafts, she’s organizing a holiday craft fair this year at Mosaic Community Coffeehouse, and the time to apply to be a vendor is now.

They are hoping to get vendors who do handmade crafts such as jewelry, knitting, and other good-quality handmade crafts. There’s no charge to be a vendor, but there …

Seattle Bouldering Project Coming to Stone Way

Jack October 17, 2019 14 Comments

As part of the ongoing remake of the southern part of Stone Way, Seattle Bouldering Project plans to expand into a new location at 3535 Interlake Ave. This is the space immediately behind (east) of Hashtag and the Stone Way Cafe (two businesses whose future seems in doubt given the Land Use Action sign out front). A small building to the north will also house some SBP facilities.

For those unfamiliar with bouldering, SBP offers this definition: “Bouldering is rock climbing, without using ropes or harnesses, on climbs that don’t go too high off the ground.” So rocks and heights …
