St. Benedict Catholic School Celebrates 110 Years in Wallingford

Julie Martin June 6, 2019 Comments are off

As our city continues to grow and evolve, Wallingford hosts many historic gems. This week, the artifact comes in the form of some energetic and educated teenagers. We join with the community of St. Benedict School in celebrating the graduation of its 110th class of 8th-grade students.

1908

A look back…

St. Benedict School opened in September 1908 by two Sisters of the Dominican Sisters of Edmonds, Sister Mary Vincentia Murphy and Sister M. Josephine Ratte, who lived at Holy Angels Academy in Ballard and walked to and from school.

St. Benedict had an inaugural enrollment of 66 students that …

Tie-Dye Kazoo Parade

Jordan June 6, 2019 Comments are off

If you enjoy watching the Fremont Solstice Parade (June 22), let me tell you something: the only thing better than watching a parade is being in a parade. Seriously, the best seat in the house is IN THE HOUSE!

But, assuming you’re not ready to strip down to your birthday suit, glam yourself up in paint and start pedaling, you may be wondering how to get involved.

Wallingford’s Leah Papernick and Michael Royalty have an answer for you:

I’m really excited to be hosting my first Fremont Solstice Parade ensemble this year and would love it if you could help …

Semi-Weekly Goings-On

Jessica Trupin June 5, 2019 1 Comment

Hello again! So, I’m sorry to tell you that you missed Open Books’ Reading with Doyali Islam, Shankar Narayan, and Seattle’s 2018-19 Youth Poet Laureate Azura Tyabji this past Saturday (but here’s the link in case you want to look them up and go buy their poetry, which I strongly recommend). It was extremely hard to go inside on such a beautiful evening, but worth it to hear these three incredible poets read works about love, longing for home, fathers, justice, and cephalopods. It wasn’t even dark when we stepped back outside.

That’s all a set-up, of course, to let …

Wallyburger Won’t

Jordan June 4, 2019 3 Comments

Just past its two-year anniversary, Wallyburger, the country-western themed burger joint on 45th, has closed its doors for good. No reason was given (and no response was offered to our email inquiries), just a note on the front door saying “Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have decided to take the summer off. Thank you for your patronage. See you in the fall”, and a note on their Instagram feed saying Happy Trails.

The restaurant business is a tough one, and Wallyburger may have felt the squeeze between Dick’s Drive-In to the east and the new Portland-based Little Big Burger to …

Dunn Lumber Expansion Update

Jordan June 3, 2019 1 Comment

It’s been over two years since the last update on Dunn Lumber’s planned expansion project, but progress is being made. This past Wednesday, Dunn invited neighbors down to a Site Walk to talk about the latest plans.

As a reminder, the plan is to take down the existing structure and lumber yard that occupy the block across from Dunn’s retail store and offices on Latona and NE Northlake Way and put up a modern building that will house a warehouse and covered yard as well as retail space and offices.

One change to the project since the last update is …

Two Options to Meet the City Council District 4 Candidates This Week

Katy May 29, 2019 30 Comments

If you’re having trouble figuring out which of the ten candidates you want to support in the city council elections this fall, you have two opportunities this week to meet the candidates, ask questions, and hear them speak about the issues that affect all of us.

Your first option is to head over to the Cascade Bicycle Club auditorium, 7787 62nd Ave NE, on Thursday, May 30th from 5:30-7:30 p.m..
