Reflections From the 2024 Wallingford Parade

lbush July 27, 2024 Comments are off

The 71st Annual Wallingford Parade, the longest running Seafair sponsored parade was held on Saturday, July 13th under warm, pleasant sunny skies.  The mood was festive as judged by the crowds who lined 45th Street to watch the parade.

This year’s parade featured over 800 participants and 35 marching groups or decorated vehicles/floats including many local businesses or organizations including Bedrooms and More, Cedarhouse Flowers, Sock Monster, Hawaii General Store, Historic Wallingford, and Family Works among others.  Our thanks go to the Seafair Marshalls who facilitated parade day sign-in of participants on the day of the parade.  …

More good news for the Wallingford community – Fremont Community School’s Childcare Center

Tara July 25, 2024 Comments are off

More good news for the Wallingford community – Fremont Community Schools Childcare center recently celebrated their one-year anniversary!  Located in lower Wallingford, under the leafy branches of an American Sycamore tree, we are happy to announce that our program has spots available for babies and toddlers between the ages of 4 – 30 months. Our center is inspired by Waldorf Education and focuses on compassion, imagination and helping children grow positive social connections.  We are play-based and provide children with time outside as much as possible. We provide high quality food and serve largely organic, vegetarian snacks and meals…

Pollinators are Welcomed in Wallingford

Ellen Robinson July 22, 2024 1 Comment

I have noticed a lot of activity along the Burke Gillman trail on the north shore of Lake Union. Many mornings I have seen a group wearing orange safety vests digging, sawing or shoveling mulch. Then I found a few new signs highlighting a pollinator garden and that this project is supported by the Green Seattle Partnership.

I was able to speak with Eric Sterner, a Plant Ecologist who works for Seattle Parks and Recreation, who described the project as a collaboration between the City of Seattle, community groups, non-profits, businesses, schools, and thousands of volunteers, who work together to …

Wallingford Neighborhood Business Spotlight – Cedarhouse Flowers and Peti Boutique

A Lifelong Love of Flowers

One of the most enjoyable aspects of life in Wallingford is exploring the charm and beauty of the neighborhood businesses. One of my favorites is Cedarhouse Flowers, located at 1621 N 45th Street which is owned and operated by Parnel Lettunich, and is supported in the shop by Mandi, Willow, Carmella and Lucy.

This shop was established in 2014 and named for the cedar-sided garage where it all started. Since the shop was opened, the culture has remained the same: they make lush, unusual arrangements with heart, AND they want to do whatever it takes …

Julia's of Wallingford sign for commuter specials

Not everyone can afford a $16 breakfast, let alone has time to sit down and enjoy it. For those on a budget (time and money), the recently reopened Julia’s is here for you! They have a series of offerings they’re calling “Commuter Breakfasts”, including things like an Egg Sandwich for $4.99 and a Quick Go Burrito for $8.99. I’m thinking this is ideal for the service workers in our neighborhood who commute from outside the city! Tell your barista, hairstylist, or cashier about this. They might appreciate you looking out for them!

These specials are offered weekdays only.…

Goodbye to an Old Friend

Geoff Berg July 16, 2024 2 Comments

It was a dark and stormy night . . .

Well actually it was just a stormy morning, back on June 3rd of this year, w hen we experienced wind gust up to 50 miles per hour, with Cliff Maas, on his weather blog calling it more like a November morning. Combined with wet soils, due to substantial rainfall at the time, numerous trees around the city came down.

One tree that did not survive was a native Bigleaf Maple, on the corner of 44th and Burke Avenues, belonging to Wallingford residents Mary Pembroke Perlin and her husband David. Mary …
