Megan Dulgar Okabayashi July 14, 2024 Comments are off

Our neighborhood dose of Aloha, the Hawaii General Store expressed surprise and gratitude at the Vanishing Seattle post encouraging shoppers to save their store.

Hawaii General is a place I visit periodically when I am looking for a cheerful trinket to fill an advent calendar, a fresh lei to cement a celebration, or just a friendly face and some kind chatter. One of my first times in, the owner took one look at my then toddler son and deemed him “kolohe”–a rascal. For what it’s worth, she was absolutely correct. This is the warm neighborliness — the solid dose of …

#20 Bus Slated for Elimination … Apparently

Jack July 13, 2024 18 Comments

Back in August of last year, Gary wrote about the possible elimination of #20 bus service which, then, never happened. However, the drama continues.

Wallyhood was contacted by neighbors several weeks ago concerning the elimination of #20 bus service in September as part of a reduction and consolidation of bus service as the Link light rail Lynnwood extension opens this Fall. The #20 serves the northern and eastern extremes of Wallingford. (See Metro’s map here.)

It is surprisingly difficult to substantiate this. Metro’s own blog detailing bus route changes, published in May, notes merely service reductions for the 20. At …

Gasworks Brewing is Now Open

DOUG. July 9, 2024 Comments are off

Nearly two years after tantalizingly hanging a “COMING SOON” shingle on their chain link fence and hosting a kick-off event, Gasworks Brewing has opened for business at 2401 N Northlake Way.

After a soft launch on July 2, the waterside brewery opened their doors to the public on July 3, just in time for some fantastic weather and the annual party that descends upon Wallingford every Independence Day. While I wasn’t brave enough to battle the crowds on the Fourth, I did sit down for a hazy IPA on their landscaped terrace the following Saturday.

My initial observation is that …

Wallingford Beautification Call for Artists

Rhonda Bush July 8, 2024 Comments are off

The collaborative effort to bring public art to three utility boxes on N. 45th is moving forward. At the end of June, the leadership team for the Wallingford Beautification Utility Box Project learned that funding from a Department of Neighborhoods Small Sparks Grant has been awarded. With the green light on funding, they can now move to the next step—reaching out to artists to help tell the story of Wallingford. A $750 artist stipend will be offered for each completed box. To learn what is required and to apply, go to the Wallingford Beautification page on the Historic Wallingford…
