Julia’s Wallingford is back in town!

Rhonda Bush April 18, 2024 Comments are off

After 42 years of operation, Julia’s Wallingford restaurant closed on December 31, 2023. Wallyhood mourned the occasion, like many across the city. My husband Larry and I stopped in for brunch on that sad day. It was difficult to say goodbye to a neighborhood fixture. Concerned speculation about the redevelopment of the property, and wishes for a replacement restaurant in this space at 4401 Wallingford Ave N were expressed by neighbors.

But, signs of new life around the restaurant recently appeared. The building was painted, and the sidewalks cleaned. A sign on the front door showed the symbol for a …

Earth Day Cleanup on April 20

Earlier this month, we posted a note from Daniel about the Earth Day cleanup that is scheduled for the ‘hood on Saturday, Earth Day. But unless you scribbled that event on your digital or analog calendar, you’ve likely forgotten. Here’s your reminder! There will also be information about other volunteer opportunities including this year’s Wallingford Parade, the Wallingford Beautification Committee, and if you are interested in volunteering to keep your part of Wallingford clean year-round, you can sign up for Seattle Public Utilities Adopt-A-Street program.

From Daniel’s original article:

The bi-annual Wallingford Earth Day family-friendly neighborhood cleanup event is coming …

Figurehead Brewing on Stone Way Opens Tomorrow!

DOUG. April 15, 2024 Comments are off

As reported in the pages of Wallyhood way back in February 2023, Magnolia mainstay Figurehead Brewing was planning an expansion to a new, second location at 3513 Stone Way. The owners had been hoping to open in October 2023, but issues with permitting delayed construction for several months. After some bureaucratic touch-and-go, the long wait is over and the new space will be rolling open their doors to the public on Tuesday, April 16 at 11:00am.

Co-owner Bob Monroe was kind enough to invite me to their soft opening this past Sunday afternoon. The build-out is impressive. The rugged gutted …

Library Implements Spring Closures

Jack April 14, 2024 2 Comments

Quite a number of Seattle Public Library branches will have their hours shortened for the next couple of months. Our neighborhood branch will be closed Fridays and Saturdays through June 4. I’m not sure when these closures began, but they’re recent. Hopefully, you didn’t show up last Friday or Saturday to find the doors locked.

Staffing is one of the issues causing the closures. According to the SPL blog:

The Seattle Public Library is scheduling intermittent branch closures at several locations through Tuesday, June 4 due to limited staffing capacity. The temporary schedule listed below is being implemented to …

Go Fund Murphy’s!

DOUG. April 13, 2024 2 Comments

You’re likely not hearing it here first, but this news bears repeating: There’s a very good chance that Wallingford icon, Murphy’s Pub, could soon close.

The property at 45th and Meridian containing Murphy’s, Kostas Opa, Rugs of the World, and the old Fat Cat Records building will soon be put up for sale. A new developer would likely demolish the existing structures and build up to 150 residential units.

Prior to listing the entire property, the owners of Murphy’s came to an agreement with their landlord—they could buy the portion of the property their pub sits on for the low, …

The Street Closure That Isn’t

Susanna April 10, 2024 41 Comments

As reported by Wallyhood back in December, the Department of Transportation has plans to add permanent planters and permanent signs supported by concrete bases to the Healthy Street closures along 44th and 43rd from Latona to Interlake. You know, those closures they did for the pandemic that never went away. The city plans on making those closures permanent. But should we?

I personally think they’re ineffective and a nuisance. But I wanted to know if I was the only one, so I did a Facebook poll on the Wallingford Fremont Community page. Of the 261 individuals that responded, 66% said …
