Teddy Bears Everywhere

Susanna April 4, 2020 1 Comment

A little story for you… when I had laser eye surgery a few years back the doctor gave me a valium to calm my nerves. And in case that was not enough, as I lay down on the table he handed me a teddy bear. Now for a moment I thought that was pretty silly for him to hand me, a grown woman, a teddy bear. But you bet your life I held onto that teddy bear while the laser was doing its work on my precious eyes. And it helped a little bit. Maybe it was a bit of …

Vámonos Spanish Center in Tangletown is now offering virtual Spanish classes. It’s a great way to support a local business and make good use of your extra time at home. I’ve been taking classes with them for a few months now and they’ve done a great job transitioning from in-person to virtual classes. I really look forward to it every week. Make the most of your time at home by learning Spanish.

More from the owner Amanda Reichert:

Growing Good Apples 101

Susanna March 9, 2020 2 Comments

The apple trees are budding in Wallingford, and if you want a good harvest you should start tending to them soon. I’m not a fruit tree expert, but I am an avid backyard gardener and a nerd who reads a lot. It took me several years of research and trial and error to finally yield a good harvest from my own apple tree. Hopefully what I’ve learned can help you, too.

In my mind, I like to separate apple tree problems into three categories: (1) the apples have bug damage, (2) the apples are too small and don’t taste great, …

New district Councilmembers sworn in and ready for business

Susanna January 8, 2020 16 Comments

A new year brings in new faces at City Hall. Monday, January 6th was the official inauguration and swearing in ceremony for our district City Councilmembers. The majority of Wallingford is part of City Council District four, represented now by Alex Pedersen. A stretch of northern Wallingford above 50th is included in District six, which has Dan Strauss as its new Councilmember since Monday.

Councilmember Pedersen has actually been on the job since late November due to our previous Councilmember Rob Johnson not completing his full term. Since Johnson’s replacement Abel Pacheco was appointed, not elected, Pederson was able to …

The City is just days away from passing sweeping zoning changes across Seattle. Led by City Councilmember Rob Johnson, Seattle City Council is pushing through zoning changes for 27 urban villages throughout Seattle, including Wallingford, with a final vote scheduled for March 18. The upzone legislation is unfortunately expected to pass.

These zoning changes are part of the Housing Affordability and …

Just when you think you know how they’re going to upzone, they change it again

Susanna March 6, 2019 54 Comments

A few weeks ago, I reported on amendments our own Councilmember Rob Johnson was bringing forth to soften upzones around the edges of the Wallingford urban village. On limited blocks, amendments 4-14, 4-15 and 4-17 would have limited the upzone to Residential Small Lot (RSL) zoning, creating a step down effect between the higher density areas inside the urban village and lower density areas outside of the urban village.

Personally, I was surprised that density-loving Johnson was even considering this, and I was just about to write an email to thank him for bringing forward these amendments. Unfortunately, that smidge …
