Major Fire at the Seattle Boat Company

Gary Shigenaka March 22, 2023 Comments are off

Ahhh, springtime in Seattle!  Ain’t it grand?  I went outside this morning to plant a few seeds, and wallowed in…the acrid smell of burnt plastic, fiberglass, and hydraulic fluid.  It is usually just exploded propane tanks and charred tents wafting in the morning air, so I knew something was up. Or more correctly, upwind, as I was downwind of the terrible fire at Seattle Boat Company (across Northlake from Voula’s Offshore Café, on the east side of the Ship Canal Bridge), which became engulfed in flames early this morning. The Seattle Times and other sources report a 32-year-old man was…

A Take on Visions of Wallingford Film Screening and Conversation

Julie Martin March 19, 2023 1 Comment

I was delighted to attend the Visions of Wallingford Film Screening this past week. Though, it went way beyond just a documentary viewing. It was a curated evening of community and conversation that surprised, challenged and invigorated me.

The event was held at the Good Shepherd Center theatre on the 4th floor and the evening sun streamed through the vintage stained glass. After receiving our packets for the night, there was time at the beginning to wander among the tables at the sides of the room where community organizations shared information. It was wonderful to meet contributors to this blog …

cool season plant starts

Spring is almost here – even though there still is a chill in the air!  As you dream about what you might want to plant in your garden this year consider some of these tips to ensure you set yourself up for success!

Right spot – The keys to a successful vegetable plot are threefold – Sun (and more sun), water, and soil.  Make sure that the location where you are planting your crops gets 6-8 hours of sunlight.  While Seattle gardens don’t need much watering in April, May and June – they do need a lot …

SPAMALOT to Support Schools

Megan Dulgar Okabayashi March 13, 2023 Comments are off

We heard from a Wallingfoord resident and Lincoln High parent about an upcoming production of Spamalot — Thanks for the tip, Lynn!

Opening March 24th, Spamalot! raises money for the arts within Seattle Public Schools. Local community theater company, Woodland Park Players, is staging the musical at Shoreline Community College later this month. Since its inception, Woodland Park Players has granted $37,000 to our public schools. Proceeds from these performances will benefit this worthy grant program.

“We’re inviting the Wallyhood community to support our schools by getting tickets and bringing friends, neighbors and family along for this Monty …

Luck and Legends – St. Patrick’s Day in Wallyhood

Megan Dulgar Okabayashi March 11, 2023 Comments are off

Hang onto your green beer and rascal revelry as we walk through a few of this day’s most famous legends.

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner and with it, a host of traditions, myths, and rowdy festivities. Though it was a far cry from the American traditions we see today, filled with green beer, debauchery and everyone asking for a kiss, the practice of celebrating Saint Patrick began in 1631, when the Christian church held a feast day honoring the Patron Saint of Ireland. This first St. Patrick’s day was held on the alleged day of his death, …

Wallingford Library Branch – New Hours and Tax Help

Julie Martin March 9, 2023 1 Comment

Here are some updates from The Wallingford Branch & The Seattle Public Library:

What’s happening at the Wallingford Branch?

With more morning and evening hours across all libraries, the new Wallingford Branch schedule adds 16 open hours per week. The new Wallingford Branch schedule is temporary through early 2024 due to a temporary staffing reallocation related to the yearlong seismic retrofit construction closure of the Green Lake Branch.  Wallingford Branch hours are likely to adjust again when the Green Lake Branch reopens in 2024.  To increase access to materials in this region, the Library has installed a 24/7 holds Pickup…

Remembering Jessie, The “Mayor” of Wallingford

Megan Dulgar Okabayashi March 5, 2023 1 Comment

The best part of a neighborhood are the neighbors. Wallyhood heard from the sister of Jessie Kerani Aleya VanVorhis, a longtime Wallingford resident and friend to many, who recently passed. The following words about Jessie are shared by Naomi Strand (one of Jessie’s sisters).

Jessie Kerani Aleya VanVorhis, an amazing blaze of energy in a small body, passed away December 29th, 2022 at the age of 35. Jessie was born in Calcutta, India and died on Whidbey Island, Washington. Her special powers were her electric joy and ability to connect with people.

She moved to Wallingford when she was …
