After 50 years serving the PNW twist on Mexican food, Taco Time on 45th and Corliss closed in July. According to an article published in The Seattle Times, business slowed significantly during the pandemic, and increases in the cost of labor and food caused them to close this location. The funky mirrored glass building, built in 1990, was soon covered with graffiti and its parking lot was littered with trash.

On January 8th, the editorial staff at Wallyhood held one of our irregular gatherings with writers, potential writers and editors, and any other curious or interested community members. The Blue Star Café graciously hosted us in their back room and kept us fueled with IPA and appetizers. The purpose of the meeting was, as usual, to recruit and engage. Wallyhood received word, late last week, that the Seattle Public Library (SPL) is partnering with Key Bank to provide financial education in our neighborhood.  The first two classes, especially, struck me as timely, after folks see their bills after the holiday season.  Key Bank staff will discuss financial education on these topics on the next three Tuesdays, at the Solid Ground Building (Cheryl Cobbs Murphy Room) from 3-4 pm:

It’s been a few years since we did an annual wrap on the Year in Wallyhood. But this year, we’re bringing it back: a list of our top ten stories ranked by page views*. To put these numbers into perspective, wallyhood gets about 15,000 page views every month and about half as many unique visitors. This Friday and Saturday, January 10 and 11, Ladd and Lass Brewing will be celebrating their third great year of brewing beer, and we’re all invited to join the party. I used to say that Ladd & Lass, located at 722 NE 45th St, was the nearest brewery for most of our neighborhood. With the addition of Gasworks Brewing down on Lake Union, that’s true for fewer of us. Still, it’s just the other side of I-5 on 45th street, so I’m sure you can find your way there.
